We've long been known for "Hoosier Hysteria,"
The Indy 500, our summer State Fair;
But, since late '89, something else has been added:
We now have the HOOSIER MILLIONAIRE!
On Saturday nights, people gather to watch it
(Or set VCRs if they're going to be gone).
Six everyday people are stars-for-the-evening--
And six will leave richer than when they came on!
And one doesn't even have to be Hoosier
To be one of the six that appear on the show.
What numbers one picks is the thing that determines
If one will be taking home very much dough!
There are parents, grandparents, teachers, and students;
Engineers, poets, and truck-drivers, too;
Preachers and bartenders; newspaper carriers.
Perhaps, someday, me! Perhaps, someday, you!
In 1993, this poem won First Honorable Mention in Category #6 (Indiana Award) at that year's Indiana State Federation Of Poetry Clubs' Fall Rendezvous!!!
