My new computer is even worse than the old one, but on 60 Minutes last night I saw a piece about the Geek Squad. These are computer nerds who will come to your home and fix your crappy computer without giving you a big run-around whether it's hardware or software. Supposedly. So, I've made an appointment, we'll see what happens. It looks kind of expensive, but I've used reasonably-priced, cheap, and expensive services, and they all seem about the same: pretty much shitty. I've never had one yet that didn't have to come back at least once, and they never guarantee their service. (Including the idiots I just bought the damn computer from!) According to the web site, Geek Squad does guarantee their service.
