Band on the Boardwalk
up and down the boardwalk
enjoying wasted electricity
luminous orbs to see after dark
can't believe the immensity

trying to move against the flow
among myriad limbs all pressed against us
no room to breathe
looking for an opening

near the end of the avenue
near the edge of darkness
freaky clown skulks near the open space
we were hoping to occupy

music playing every other block
by buskers, cars, or loudspeakers
all told over a million souls
assembled for the show

still more in the suburbs
and more left in the metro
impossible to count them all
we didn't even bother

we came to see the band
since our town was too minor
we danced and sang and drank away
the night in summer merriment

too hot - too hot!
no air to spare
we fled the bustle
but got nowhere

leaving after two am
jam packed with the cars
inching away home again
to the small time under the stars
