I joined a writer's group here recently. Well, technically I applied for membership and was accepted. The rules are a bit rigorous but I'm hoping it will give me the opportunity to develop some discipline as a writer. It will mean devoting a few more hours each day to writing, something I always need to do more.
It will mean less time is suddenly available for any number of other things like work, like cleaning house, like spending time with the fiance...I'm not sure how that is going to work out. In the beginning he seemed quite impressed with my hobby, ravaging my port and reading through most of my pieces. However, during a distant but not forgotten argument, he referred to my writing as "sob stories", and since then, I've been naturally less eager to share with him. Its been difficult and disappointing. I think for a while, it actually made me hang back a bit. But then I had to ask myself, who do I write for? Me. Always me, without apology. Regardless of what others think, I write simply because I have to. If I can turn that passion into publication, nothing would make me happier. I'd love to have that kind of validation. There are so many talented writers out there all striving for same thing. The great thing is there is no limit to how many talent writers can exist on the planet at one time. It just takes time, mine. At least if I can walk past a bookstore someday and see my book in the window I can turn to him and say, "at least I didn't waste the time I took away from you.." thats got to be some kind of consolation right? Ah, to dream a little dream...
