Dazzling

Animal Parade

While a dozen candidates
campaigned their promises,
it was merely a contest
between the Duck and the Monkey.

The Duck quacked a bite
about moving forward
in every speech
while the Monkey flung poo
and screeched about borders

I wanted my vote Green,
but knew that ticks
for the Amphibian
would waddle back
to the Duck

better, at least,
than a swing
to the Monkey . . .

Should I vote
like a Donkey?
Complete my civic duty
uselessly, wordlessly?

No, I shall put
the marks in the boxes
in all the right places
in my booth, a cardboard
cage in the zoo -
better the Duck
that you know.

Voting is compulsory
(as it should be)
but we are stuck
between a Duck
and a hard place.
