The First Day of May in Las Vegas

May Day,
the first Day of May
and the wind is blowing.

The wind is blowing
though the neighbors' olive trees,
oak trees,
and pine trees,
while the neighbors' trashcans wait
for the trash trucks to stop beside them,
for the sanitation workers to empty them.

It is May Day,
perhaps it should be a holiday
for all workers,
but nothing stops the garbage trucks,
nothing stops the trash trucks,
nothings stops the sanitation workers
from their appointed rounds.

It is Wednesday,
the first day of May
and it is the day
the trash is picked up
in this Las Vegas neighborhood.

I Am Healing in Las Vegas

I am healing!
Day by day my strength returns,
I am capable of doing more
then the day before.

I am healing
from three days of chills
and wanting only water to drink;
now I want food,
but I want more then just soup to eat...
I think today I would like some meat.
