As I walked around Dresden I became curious about its modern beauty. Further probing into the history of the building revealed some startling information. From February 13 to February 15, 1945 (I was approximately 3 weeks old) Dresden was smashed flat by hundreds of fire bombs dropped by allied bombers. Thousands to hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed as Dresden was not prepared for a bombing onslaught.The amount of civilians killed is not agreed upon because they could only estimate the population during war time. This was done to aide Russia's advance across Europe.

Zwinger Palace, Dresden State Opera House and a handful of churches were rebuilt according to original plans. This is why most of the city is so modern. The Pipe Organ in one of the churches was magnificent. The sounds put forth from pipe organs are exceptionally pleasing. Some of the places visited were Weinerplatz, Kulterplast, and Der Furstenzug.

Dinner at the Charlottenburg Palace was designed to make everyone feel royal. It is the largest palace and the only royal residence in Dresden. It has a mausoleum and theater. There are thousands of porcelain objects and the crown jewels on display. Concerts are always a joy to me. This one was performed with period costumes.

Someone described Dresden as a beautiful fairytale city. The city treats you to green parks and peaceful scenes. Surely, the residents were trying to build a better life and put WWII behind them.
