The Golden Years:
To the International Day for the Elderly

These should be the peaceful years,
when memories of youth
bring smiles to our faces,
or tears to our eyes.

These should be the joyful years,
when our children and grandchildren
gather around the hearth
of our wisdom,
and sip the warm knowledge
of our experience.

What do our golden years hold?
We move toward the veil
that will split
in a second
when our lungs inhale their final breath
and our body exhales our soul
into the world of God.
