We are experiencing dark times. It would be all too easy to give up hope. But there are better days ahead.
This week's Spiritual Newsletter is all about having faith and being there for the other.

About 10 days ago, my sister put up her Christmas tree. My mom and uncle weren’t far behind. When I walk through the village, I see fairy lights twinkling behind windows. It makes me smile, but it also brings home to me how desperate many of us are for some comfort and joy.
2020 hasn’t been a good year, and it’s followed several years that many were glad to see the end of. We know that there are dark days still ahead. It is easy to understand, then, that people seek the light. Whether religious or not, some candles, some fairy lights, some decorations can break through the gloom, at least slightly, helping us face what is to come.
Unfortunately, I cannot join in. I don’t have a tree, nor decorations, and even if I did there would be no point in putting them up as my house currently looks like a storage facility. Most of my belongings are in boxes, as we were supposed to be moving to Scotland. As the house we were supposed to be moving to has a natural water supply, and by law this has to be tested before someone new moves in, and those tests are not currently taking place due to the pandemic, and they’re not certain when tests can take place once more, we’re kind of stuck. We could unpack, only to get a phone call that we can go ahead and move. Or we could be facing months living with a load of boxes. Still, things could be worse. And I can always buy a string of fairy lights and hang them by the window, or something.
The truth is that as much as the trees and the candles and the lights can offer us a boost, what we need are true tidings of comfort and joy. This goes especially for those who have lost loved ones and/or worked all hours of the day and night on the frontline dealing with the pandemic. For those who celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, the holidays will no doubt remind you of the love and hope and good that can be found in the world. But however we celebrate, and whatever we celebrate, or however we spend the final weeks of the year, it is likely to be different than usual, and that can be painful and unsettling.
Here in the UK there is an ongoing discussion about whether or not families can get together over the holidays and, if so, where to place the limit on the number of people involved. In the Netherlands, my mom and dad hope to be able to have my uncle over for Christmas dinner, as otherwise he’d be all alone. Considering our circumstances it will come as no surprise that we’re not planning anything special in this house. There will be some gifts for some people, though. It is pretty much impossible to stop me from doing at least some Christmas shopping, and wrapping.
It helps me to remember that this, too, shall pass. Humanity has been through dark times before. It has faced and overcome pandemics before. This is not the ‘new normal’. We will get through this, and we will do so together, helping and protecting one another, saving as many lives as we can.
Even when families cannot get together, one of the good things about living in this day and age is that we have the technology to stay close even over long distances. It is not the same as sitting around a table together, sharing a meal, and then playing a game together, or watching a movie, or just talking and enjoying the other’s company. It won’t feel the same. But we can connect. We can talk. We can see the other if we wish. We can still play games. Share a movie. Tell stories. Reminisce. Watch the kids unwrap presents. Light the candles. Not the same, no, but not alone.
Let’s be there for the other, as we see this through. There are better times ahead. We just have to have faith.
