Well, January flew by! Believe it or not, I’m late getting this newsletter in. Yikes! I had some great replies on my January poll so I thought I’d share.
I asked: “What do you love about January?” December is finally over! I’m pooped! But, wait, January is around the corner. What do you love about January?
Believe it or not, “Other” was the big winner. Some reasons included:
BBQs with family and friends
The last big blast of football, both college and professional, before the long gap between the final gun at the Super Bowl and the first pitch of MLB’s Opening Day.
January is closer to spring than December.
#2 Shopping is Cheaper
#3 Wooly Socks
While I my newsletter is a little early for February, I thought I’d talk a little bit about Valentines traditions, especially candy. What’s your favorite? Is there a hidden meaning to Chocolate?
I also hope to touch upon some more Romantic Hero Archetypes. Last month we looked at: The Bad Boy, The Best Friend, The Charmer, The Lost Soul.
I also know that for some, Valentines isn’t all that. For you, I’ll be sharing some “Cupid Slam” poetry from the Bard’s Hall, because we at the Hall know that February isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

For those of us who get into the ambience of “Valentines,” we’ve developed a bunch of traditions. Some of us give cards. Some give flowers. Chocolate and candy are most likely involved. Couples like to share a romantic meal; one where they might go out to their favorite restaurant or they might cook it at the house. Some like to watch their favorite romantic movie. What it boils down is showing our significant other quality appreciation and that they are important to us.
I’m a sucker for a good chocolate. Here in Southern California, I like See’s Chocolate. Las Vegas has Ethel M Chocolates. Where I’m from in New Hampshire, I remember buying Van Otis chocolates. You will always melt my heart with one of the above mentioned chocolates. And for those who can’t peanut, there’s Vermont Nut Free. I sound like a chocolate ad. Why don’t you write in and tell me what your favorite chocolate company is and I’ll post it in my next newsletter.
A popular Valentine candy is “Sweethearts,” They started in 1866, when Daniel Chase made a machine that would press letters onto candy lozenges. In 1902 they became the candy we know and love. One of the appeal of “Sweethearts” is the messages on the heart. It’s one of the best selling candies in February.
Hershey’s kisses is another popular candy. They started up in 1907. A chocolate machine would squeeze out a kiss onto the conveyer belt and then hand wrapped. The kiss was named for the sound the machine made or it could have been because the chocolate was a bite size. We’ll never know. What makes it so popular is that it’s the perfect size to pop into your mouth.
Who doesn’t love a heart shaped box filled with chocolate? Richard Cadbury thought if he made a heart shaped box it would increase sales. He made the boxes, put Alpine scenes on them and offered them during February. The marketing concept took off and you can find a variety of heart shaped boxes from many chocolate makers.

The Professor
This guy reminds me of “Robert Langdon” from the Dan Brown books. He’s smart, maybe a bit introverted, and not prone to change, but he is honest and candid and that’s the appeal of this guy. He won’t let you know. Another great example of this archetype is James Spader’s character, “Daniel Jackson” from Stargate. He’s not much of an action guy, he’ll think his way out of a problem.
The Adventurer
This guy is all about the action. He’s fearless. He’s in motion – consistently. He never sleeps. He’s physical, not afraid to take chances and loves to explore. He’s a pirate. A Privateer. An explorer. Indiana Jones comes to mind.
As Valentines Day approaches, I send you good vibes in however you celebrate.

Definitely Best Friend and Lost Soul. Especially the latter is highly relatable to me as I was (and still am occasionally) one of them myself. And I'd rather have a Best Friend who turns into something more than the other two types. I don't want to relate to those as they have only caused mayhem in my life so far.
