Judging
If you’re planning on hosting a contest here at WDC, you need to think about judging. After all, judging is essential to every contest. If you judge the contest alone, you shouldn’t have any problems picking your winners. If, however, you choose to use multiple judges, then you need to establish how to determine the final winners, as most likely your judges will not agree on whose pieces should win. I spoke to several people and will outline two different methods that seem to work well for judging with multiple judges. Both methods use a ranking system to decide who will win.
Method 1
The first method is simple. As an example we’ll start by stating that you need to find winners for first, second and third place. Have each of your judges send you their picks for each of the places. Next you assign each place a set amount of points. (i.e. First place = 5 points, second place = 4 points, third place = 3 points, etc.) Then you simply add each of the scores for each piece together and average the scores. The one with the highest score wins.
Method 2
The other method is based on a scale of score points from zero to 100. Each entrant is judged using specific criteria and awarded points based upon meeting that criteria. Then you have each judge send you the score points for the entrants. Again, you average the score points and the ones with the highest score points are your winners.

Tied Scores
For both methods, if you end up with two entries averaging the same score you can do a couple of things: each judge can go back and pick the place between those two entries; a tie-breaking judge can be used to settle the placement or you can award two of the entries the same award. For instance, if you have a tie for second, you can award two second place winners instead of second and third.
Judging a contest is difficult at best, especially if you have a large contest with many entrants and multiple judges. A couple of final things to consider when judging: consider giving the judges a deadline to have their picks submitted, determine ahead of time what you will do if one or more of your judges cannot fulfill their obligation (you can either judge without them or have back-up judges), and reward you judges for their time and effort (gift points or a judging merit badge make good presents).
