Review Groups/Contests

While sitting watching my son’s baseball practice, I was reminded of reviewing here at WDC. The coaches always give the kids such encouraging words, even when they’re not perfect, which at seven and eight years old is pretty frequent. The constant echoes of “great job, stay with it, nice throw, and good swing,” keep the boys motivated to try their hardest each time they throw, catch and bat. (Yes, here in Texas we have fall baseball!)

Good reviewing is done much in the same way. Reviews are supposed to entice the author to get out their pen, pencil or sit down at their computer and give it their best shot each time or to revise a piece to make it better. It’s not always going to be perfect, in fact, more times than not, it won’t be, but that’s what reviews are for: to encourage and help the writer improve.

WDC is full of terrific review groups and reviewing contests. It is a prominent activity around the site; in fact, it’s one of the most important reasons many people showcase their work here – to receive feedback. Reviews can be done privately or made public, but should always be helpful and encouraging.

Running a review group or contest can be a lot of work, especially if you have other members to keep motivated. Offering incentives, such as gift points or even merit badges is one way to keep your members reviewing. Just remember to set clear guidelines and follow through with your promises. If you don’t want to run your own group, plenty already exist that I’m sure would love to have new members!

Don’t forget, even if you don’t belong to a review group, reviewing is a great way to earn those coveted gift points. Many items offer Auto Rewards for reviews of 250 characters or more. These can be found easily at the top of the page in the listings next to the logo or at the bottom of the page by clicking on the dollar sign. In addition, you earn gift points from the system for reviews of 250 characters as well. Don’t forget to review newbies, too. Each person you review for the first time will earn you 50 gift points from the Review Mixer (sometimes more when double or even triple gift points are offered). So go out there and review, review, review!

By the way, *Balloon1* Happy 6th Birthday WDC!!! *Balloon2*

I hope you’ve found this issue helpful!

Terry, I enjoyed reading this newsletter. The tips on judging were helpful. Holding contests are fun, reading the entries is great, choosing three winners is hard! *Delight* I admire those who can do it over and over.

I’m glad that you found it helpful! Judging is really tough to do! I recently finished helping Elisa: Middle Aged Stik with her contest and it was hard to pick winners. BTW, for anyone interested, the winners list is here: "Troublesome Winners!

Ter, thank you so much for this topic. I am running a contest which has many judges and have been thinking about what could make the judging process smooth and consistent. I've found it right here, so again thank you.

Cookie, I’m so glad you found this helpful! Good luck with judging your contest! *Smile*
