Letter from the editor

Summer this year will officially arrive on Jun 20th, 2024 and will end on September 22, 2024. In my neck of the woods, summer this year seemed to start at the beginning of May. Welcome to Canada. We basically have two seasons – summer and winter.

Most Canadians want the long winter to end, and there are many discussions in the news and donut shops as to when summer will arrive. If you want to know what spring is like in Canada, here’s a photo:

We have spring for one and half days and then, you wake up the next day and it’s 30C. (86F) The plans I have for summer follow a certain pattern every year. At the end of April, it’s time to put up the screened gazebo. Even if hail and another snow storm is heading our way, it goes up. The next tasks are of greater importance. In a small shed, rummage through all the stuff and find the furniture to go in the gazebo. Hook up the power for the fountain, string the tiny twinkle lights, and drag the gigantic storage bin with all of the cushions and other paraphernalia, like a fly swatter, citronella candles, and various bug skeletons.

Before the gazebo is ready to be occupied, it’s time to rake all of the leaves and clean the flowerbeds. The reward? Grab a drink of choice and sit under the twinkle lights to enjoy the labor of my work. I raise a glass to celebrate my little haven – it’s like a dedication to the summer season.

I cherish the days I can relax in the gazebo to enjoy nature. Until …

… it all falls apart quicker than a house of cards.

The temperature climbs to an unbearable 37C (98.6F) with 92 percent humidity making it feel even hotter. The remaining summer weeks are spent in an air-conditioned house.

The hot and humid weather can stay until the Canadian winter arrives in the first week of October. For most around the world, winter officially starts on December 21st, 2024. Apparently, Canada never receives the memo.

While the flurries swirl around me, I always have a hard time deciding what to do first – dismantle the gazebo, chip the ice out of the fountain, or sweep out the igloo.

On the positive side, so far, the weather has been beautiful. We might break a record this year and have a normal summer instead of a fiery inferno.

No chance of that happening. Looking ahead at the forecast, it will climb up to 28C (82F) with a high humidity all week with thunderstorms tossed in for good measure. I’m glad I planned the huge family picnic in the park on Saturday.

The summer weather here changes hourly. Yesterday it was hot and humid. When I woke up today, I needed a parka to feed the birds and chase, Kenny, the fat squirrel up a tree. Something tells me I better plan on sweeping out the igloo soon.

Enjoy your summer! Hopefully, it won't be as hot as mine. *Fire* *Wink*

*Questiong* How’s the summer weather in your neck of the woods? Has the heat, humidity, or storms ever ruined your summer plans? *Sundae**Icecreamv**Glassesb*

*Thought2* Feedback from my last newsletter, "Record Breaking Inspiration.

Beholden : "Thank you very much for including my short story, "Yellow, in your Editor's Picks section."

You're welcome! *Cool*

Fivesixer : "The German pop star Hasselhoff?!"

*Rolling* You got it! His five seconds of fame. *Wink*

*Tower*Comments from the Newsfeed. I asked the question : What funny thing would you do to break a Guinness World record?

Jimminycritic : "Live underwater by myself with nothing but streaming services like Netflix for longer than anyone else. You would never see me again! Of course, there would be bathrooms and food and a heated blanket I would name Snuggles..."

Mousethyme : "I tried to break a few goofy ones in my day but I don't even remember what ones they were now. I once tried to break the teetie-tauter record but I found out you have to have two people for that one.... go figure....."

Indelible Ink : "Post my resume, which would no-doubt break the World's record for (non-political) mistruths and exaggeration."

keyisfake : "The longest stay at home."
