Witness testimonies are an important part of criminal investigations. It will definitely strengthen a case if one or more people witness some aspect of the crime. However, detectives and prosecutors also know that eyewitness accounts are often inaccurate.

There are many reasons why a witness’s testimony might not be completely true.

The witness might tell what they believe to be the truth, but might be mistaken. For example, if they saw a suspect running away, they might have only seen them for a few seconds, or at a distance.

If the witness is also a victim, stress or fear might influence their recall of events. For example, if someone pointed a gun at me, I probably would focus on the gun and remember nothing about the person’s appearance.

Other witnesses might deliberately lie for a variety of reasons. This witness might actually be involved in the crime. A witness might be lying to protect someone they love, or might have been threatened by the perpetrator. Or maybe they are trying to deflect suspicion onto someone they dislike.

To make your story more unique, you might want to give your characters an unusual reason for lying on the witness stand.

Something to try: Write a mystery story in which several witnesses each tell different stories.
