Have you ever had a spiritual dream? What was your most memorable dream?

Do you remember your dreams? I can’t recall every single dream I ever had, but there are some that stand out. Indeed, some of my earliest memories involve dreams of ladybirds and birds the size of skyscrapers.
I don’t often have the type of dreams that are mentioned on those dream interpretation websites. I have some of the classics – ones in which I fly, or where I have to sit an exam I’d forgotten about/didn’t study for, or those in which you try to get away from something but you get lost and can’t find your way out, and however hard you run you can’t seem to make any progress, and they’re getting closer. Mostly, though, my dreams are like movies and they can be very interesting. On a rare occasion I get a spiritual dream.
Have you ever had one of those? What did it involve? Was the spiritual message expressed through symbolism or did you come face-to-face with a deity or prophet? In my most memorable spiritual dream aliens tried to convince humans that they were there to take us to Heaven. The leader performed miracles that were mentioned in the Bible and he slowly won over the crowd. I was there, but I had an uneasy feeling about the situation. I wasn’t the only one to back out, but few of us walked away. After I woke up the dream stuck with me, and I wrote a story about it: "The Others" [ASR]. It offered me food for thought.
We live in a world in which it is increasingly difficult to determine what is real and what is not. Photographs can be altered, video can be manipulated. We’re at a point when anyone can put words in your mouth and spread the ‘evidence’. How long will it be before we do not trust the evidence of our own eyes? If a prophet arrived in this day and age how could they possibly convince us? If an angel came from Heaven would we believe what we’d witnessed or think it a publicity stunt?
Where do you think spiritual dreams come from? Are they simply a way of processing our day-to-day thoughts and feelings, or are they indeed an experience given to us to help us examine our beliefs? Would someone who is secure in their faith be more likely to have a spiritual dream or would they not need them? Would the type of dream depend on someone’s faith and culture? I do not know the answer to these questions. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences by responding to this newsletter!
I think some types of dreams are relatively common, no matter someone’s faith or culture. Most humans must long to be able to fly at some point, and anyone who’s been to school and sat exams must surely have dreams about being woefully unprepared, no matter how good a student they are or have been. Others might be more specific to one’s day-to-day life, as parents might dream about their children, and children about their parents, the farmer about their cows and fields and the administrator about endless piles of paperwork. Perhaps, then, the bond one has with their deity/deities/spiritual force also influences how they see them in their dreams, and whether or not such dreams are a source of comfort or concern. In my case I was left with questions, but it may well be that some spiritual dreams bring answers long searched for.
Not exactly spiritual – or are they? – are dreams in which I am reunited with those who have passed before. Most recently I have had several dreams about my granny. I miss her very much, and those dreams tend to be emotional. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up in tears. Even my old cats stop by for a visit. I hope that in the afterlife we will all be reunited. Any eternity would not be the same without our beloved pets.
There are people who don’t remember any of their dreams, or who say that they don’t have dreams. I like that I do dream, even if they’re not always happy ones. It’s interesting, the way that my mind works. It’s especially nice when I feel safe and loved, or when I go on a fun adventure. The food for thought offered by spiritual dreams is good as well, even if it may take a while to figure out the how and why…
