About This Newsletter

Contests & Activities Newsletter by Dawn

Taking a look and writing some words about activities and groups that focus on the art of blogging. The blog can have many purposes, whether it's to keep track of personal situations, to share things in our own worlds, make lists or outlines. One can even write fiction in a blog. It's all up to the writer.

Letter from the editor

Out of the many writing activities that I've seen around the site, one that I haven't taken part in myself is the blogging ones. I've had a blog for a long, long time. Well, I've been a member of this site for a really long time. Not when it started but a few years after, which means I've had a lot of things. The blog is something that I started back when online blogs were becoming popular, like back in 2005. I even used to have a couple of off site writing blogs too. Not so much, anymore, but I do have the blog on here and it's something that can make for a good activity too. While the blog can have many purposes, that means there is more than one way to have contests or activities that include the item.

Blogging Groups

There are a couple of groups exist for people to come together and share their blogs. These groups provide support in someone to read blogs, comment on them and may even have a method for offering prompts if someone wants to write a post but is running dry on inspiration. At least one group also offers a monthly newsletter, which we will talk about further in just a moment. Groups are great for support, communication, activities and fun.

Picking a group is a personal tasks. You can look at the ones I have linked down below, or do a search on WDC. All I did to find these was search for the word "blog" and put the search to find "groups" instead of things to read.

The Newsletter

I have been part of the group with the Unofficial Blog Newsletter for many years. Even had my blog mentioned not long ago since I posted in it again after having been dormant for some of those many years since its creation. While I get the email every month, there have been times where I haven't really read it. Much like any other newsletter (sorry other newsletter writers and I understand for those that skip reading mine). One every week is a lot and while one once a month isn't a lot, sometimes things don't catch my attention or I just get distracted. But it's nice to have the option to read and I appreciate every single one that gets produced because it isn't easy to write a newsletter. The officials take time and thought. The unofficial newsletters, and yes I've done one of those too, takes just as much time/effort and thought to create plus the actions of sending out are on you and not already handled. So, this blog newsletter is a handy email to get if you are someone who likes writing blogs.

If you have a blog, I recommend subscribing to the newsletter and reading sometimes. Not only will you get a topic to consider, but it will help you find other blogs and meet people here on the site you might not have noticed otherwise.

Challenges and/or Contests

Now for the fun part. Nothing quite like a good challenge or contest and there have been a few other the years. Some are currently inactive but they might resurface sometime later this year or maybe even be resurrected in 2025. At this time, you have a couple of options in activities if you want to share your blog posts with others who are taking part in the same challenge. This is another fun way to get inspiration from possible prompts and to also have a deadline/reason to post. For the WDC Birthday Bash week, for example, there will be a fun activity specifically for blogs that you can join.

In general, a contest is difficult with blogs because it's something that can be done as very personal but can really have any topic, which could be difficult to judge or rate one over another. Sure, it can be done. Activities and challenges are a little easier though and probably why it's a little more common that the taking part with a given range or time frame in order to get a merit badge or something is a little more common. You can post in a challenge to get exposure or just to get inspiration. There are options whether your blog is 100% raw emotions or complete works of fiction.

All you need to do is create a blog and check out some of the options for activities available if you want to take part in them. Have fun!

Editor's Picks

Here are some options. I also suggest checking out individual blogs in any of the groups or from members around the site. You will see quite a variety of blogs and might make a new friend that way.

Ask & Answer

What is your favorite blog activity? What makes you want to take part in an activity that focuses on blogging?

Since I didn't receive any feedback from last month's newsletter about community interactions, here are some prompts from a search on Pinterest that you can use for a blog entry:

1. Write about the bravest thing you believe a person can do.

2. Write 10 random facts about yourself.

3. Write advice that you would give someone who is starting out in your profession.

4. What emotional growth have you experiences in the last few months.

5. How have you evolved or changed over the last year.
