Crossword Puzzles
The one thing I really enjoy about Writing.com is the vast array of items offered. Sure, it’s mainly about writing and reading, but so many other fun things abound. Take for instance, the crossword puzzles. What a great way to entertain yourself while you’re waiting for your muse to return. WDC members have created crosswords on a variety of subjects from television shows to history. You can create a crossword of your own by following the instructions below.
First, go to the top of the page and click on the writing link. Next, go to the writing-interactive section and click on crossword puzzle. From there the setup is like most of the other items on WDC.
 Basic Item Information
 Title: give it an appropriate title
Folder: pick where you want the item to be located in your portfolio
Brief Description: you have 90 characters to entice someone to open your crossword
Intro Rating: rate your brief description
Content and Access Control Settings
Content Rating: rate the content of your questions and answers
Access Restrictions: decide who you want to see the crossword puzzle
Passkey: fill this in if you want a passkey on the item (explanatory link provided)
Group Edit Access and Edit Level: decide if you want a group to have editing access
Genres and Keywords
Genres: pick the appropriate genres
Keywords: list any relevant keywords for the search engine
Item Body
Item Body: tell us something about the crossword puzzle and list any information you want to appear above it
Item Preferences
Rating/Reviewing Preference: decide whether you want the item ratable or not
Auto Reward Gift Points: fill this in if you want to reward reviewers automatically
Copyright Information and Store Item
Save options: you can choose save, save and edit or save and view
After you’ve completed the set up, you will need to go back into the item to add the clues and the answers. Once the item is open you will see a link that says manage crossword. This is where you will add the words and the clues for each word. Your puzzle can have up to thirty words in it but words or combinations of words must be twenty characters or less.
Once you’ve added all of your words and clues, click on submit crossword updates and presto, in a matter of seconds the answers are arranged into a crossword puzzle! Next you decide if you like the arrangement of the answers. If you don’t, you have five shuffle buttons to choose from. Each button will rearrange your puzzle. When you find the one you like, click on store and you’ll have your crossword all set up and ready to go!
One brilliant feature about the crossword puzzles is the pop crossword feature. If you come across a large puzzle (or even a small one), click this button (underneath the puzzle, before the clues) and it will bring up the puzzle in another window so you don’t have to keep scrolling up and down between the puzzle and the clues.
