About This Newsletter

Contests are a great way to motivate yourself to create when you suffer from block, a creative rut, or a lack of interest in what you're currently writing.

This edition of the newsletter will discuss motivation and inspiration when creating your own contests.

Letter from the editor

We've all been there before. We sit at our screen, wanting to write something, but our mind goes blank. So, most of us turn to Writing.Com member-held contests for inspiration in order to get past our rut. But what happens when you want to hold a contest and your mind goes blank? What do you turn to for inspiration when this situation arises?

There are many Writing.Com members who love to hold contest after contest. They never seem to run out of ideas and offer endless inspiration to the rest of us. Others want to host contests, but it seems like the ideas won't come when the contest wishes come to the creation point. How do you get inspiration to create a contest in this case?

Here are a few ideas for contest host inspiration:

*Idea* Are there any upcoming holidays?

Events like Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Mardi Gras, or Groundhog Day, along with other holidays are great ways to inspire prompts for your contests.

*Idea* Are there any genre contests that you wish were hosted?

Even if you can't enter your own contest, you might like the responses from your entrants, and also use the contest as an inspiration to write your own item (though it'd only be for show, of course).

*Idea* Have you seen fun ideas that you'd love expanded in other contests?

OK, so maybe others can get irritated if you imitate existing ideas, but asking for the sake of courtesy would prevent bad feelings. Not only that, but you might find that the person you were inspired by becomes an entrant!

*Idea* Have you hosted contests in the past that you'd love reopened?

Sometimes the best way to gain inspiration is to not reinvent the wheel. Have you hosted a contest in the past that did well or others seemed to have fun with? Why not host another round? Not only do you give everyone another chance to win, but you can also see what new entrants' take on your prompt might be.

I hope that this newsletter has provided you with some inspiration in hosting your own contest! Until next month!
