The contests and activities on this site are constantly changing! Almost every day there is something new and exciting to view and participate in. The ideas are endless. Some succeed, some manage to get along, while others, unfortunately, are left behind and forgotten. My goal as your Contest & Activity newsletter editor is to provide each of you with the tools it takes to create a great success.

Take Time to Plan

I am currently planning a wedding. I didn't really intend to. To be honest, I was hoping to wait until the end of the summer to start making plans. Unfortunately, I told my mom I was getting married and she isn't so keen on waiting. Oh, sure, I had the basics picked out: who, when, where, and what will I wear? The rest of it, however, was going to wait. My reasons for wanting to wait are simple: The less time I have to plan things, the simpler the overall thing will be.

Unfortunately, that is not the case and I've already been backed into a corner and agreed to a three-tiered wedding cake and a vegetables and dip display that is, or so I'm told, "very impressive". Of course, I'm sure once the whole thing is planned out, the seven months of planning will turn out something "very impressive".

Now, what in the world does this have to do with contests and activities? Oh come on... it's really easy! The more "impressive" you want your contest and/or activity to be, the more time you'll have to spend on it. Now, you won't need to spend seven months working on it, but you will need to spend a little more than seven minutes for a truly worthwhile item.

Taking the time to think out, work on, and edit your contest and/or activity will make it that much better. Even the simplest of contests and activities should be looked over a couple times before being revealed to the public. Heck, even when I created a mock auction ("Premiumize Me") in which everyone would purchase items for ME and still donate the gift points to ME, I invited a friend to check it out and make sure everything was in order.

When creating an activity, think it out thoroughly and scribble notes on some paper beside you before you even click that "Create an Item" link. When you do create the item, keep it private, give it a passkey, and look it over. Invite a friend to look it over as well and give you some tips. Don't have a friend? Hop into scroll or go to a discussion forum that you frequent or that offers reviews to ask for help. Once the friend has looked it over, look over it one more time, make last minute alterations, and then, only then, make the item public and open for business.

And, of course, the more "impressive" the item, the further it veeres from the "normal contest", the more time you'll have to spend on it. Simple contests can be up and running in a matter of hours. More complicated contests should be given a little more time before being presented. You should also ask more than one person to look it over, to make sure that the "impressive" parts are really impressive and not confusing.

Plan, plan, plan, work, work, work, edit, edit, edit.
