Where Oh Where Has My Little Word Gone?
 I have great fun doing word searches on this site. The best part about creating a word search is the hardest part is done for you! All you have to do is think up a great theme, some fun, quirky words to go with the them and create the item. The game creates the puzzle board for you. Another great feature is that the puzzle board is randomized so even if a member tries the puzzle twice, the board isn't the same both times.
A while back, I created a word search about "Chocolate" MMMMM, why? Because I like chocolate. In my list of words I have the types of beans chocolate comes from, the types of chocolate produced and foods chocolate accompanies.
The key to creating a challenging word search is in the letter combinations in words, and varying lengths of words. Long words are fairly easy to find because they can only fit in so many directions. Shorter words can hide crosswise and in corners. The Java applet that creates the puzzle tries hard to fool you. If only one word has a "v" in it, the puzzle will randomly place other "v's" in open parts of the puzzle to fool you.
Give a word search a try, or better yet...try to create one yourself! See how long it takes you to solve your own puzzle and challenge others to beat your score. Have fun!

sarahreed: The {item:1422692 } is especially challenging. Not only to think of a very shot story, but to craft it to be exactly 100 words without repeating a single one. "The Elementalist Contest" has also been fun. Each round prompts you to write about a different element or combination of elements. "Summer Days Writing Contest -- CLOSED" is new and allows you to submit anything that you're written that week, which is great enouragement for regular writing. There are so many great contests for different genres and styles, I could go on for a long time, but those are three that I've really liked lately.
francie: Leger, this newsletter is a welcome sight and I'm looking forward to reaping the benefits from your assignment as the regular monthly editor.
I'm not much for contests, but your point is well-taken and convincing. You included a few contests I have never seen before. Will I step up to the challenge?

I enjoyed your short commentary on the power of flash fiction and honing skills used to perfect our descriptions. I agree that these flash-fiction exercises are wonderful for ripping down the scaffolding that many authors construct in order to get to their real stories. We rip down this unnecessary platforms and discover that the meat of the story is wonderful and nourishing. I myself write everyday. During the week I use little exercises such as this to focus my minds energy, then during the weekend as my handle indicates I take all my hard work through out the week and I mold it into well thought out well crafted prose and my writing has grown tremendously because of this, of course having a wonderful writing group to rely on is a plus. Great job. Keep up the good work.

I like your style of writing; it is clear and direct, and full of tips and opportunity to advance writing skills. I appreciate the links to contests and content as well. Looking forward to your next newsletter. I am glad that you took on the challenge. I just became a member less than a week ago; and I'm having trouble writing anything yet, since I revise and revise...I have some handicapping traits, so that I am slow to finish. Knowing that my "mess" is visible has held me back. This comment arena is getting my feet wet. So, thanks for the opportunity to dip in.
Rixfarmgirl  : Thanks for highlighting flash fiction, a favorite of mine. I think people don't appreciate what this form can do for them as writers. Good newsletter. I appreciate your time and efforts.
Coolhand : There are many worthwhile contests available, but I especially enjoy your "48 Hour Short Story Contest" challenge. The time restrait makes it both interesting and rewarding. I'm always excited when I recieve your notice of a new edition. I've even started a special folder for my entries. I also like "Invalid Item" . This one is judged on how well you untilize the five senses. It opened my writing to a whole new level. I highly recommend it. Contests are my favorite activities here at WDC.
