This holiday season we will reflect back on things we are thankful for. For this contest, write a short story or poem about someone expressing their thanks. Be creative. Is it a child thanking a sibling with sincerity and tears, or is it an adult with an anonymous gift to a stranger in reciprocation of thanks?

[This contest is managed and sponsored by WhoMe (325) .
This contest is not run by Writing.Com staff.]

Letter from the editor

I learned a few vital lessons with hosting my first contest, one of which is that you must have a clear and concise method for contestants to post their entries. With the first contest, contestants were to bitem link in the newsletter under the submissions, in order to enter the contest. This brought forth many questions from some and made it difficult for others. So this newsletter will focus on a few things authors should consider when hosting a contest.

~ Make it fun and inspiring:
Try to come up with a theme or prompt that is original. Many times the same tune is played during the holidays. The same prompts are also tossed around for contests, try to be creative and throw some twists in while keeping the prompt simple, yet fun.

~ Prizes or incentives are a plus:
Make sure that if the contest is to run more than one round, that the available funds are already in place before launching the contest. You do not want to be scrambling trying to earn gps to pass out prizes, when you should be reviewing or already passing out the prize.

~Clear and easy to follow rules:
If the rules get to intricate or complicated, many authors will steer clear of even giving the contest a second glance. Keep it Simple.

~Where to post and how to do so:
Make sure there is no question on how authors should enter the contest. Make it easy for them to do so. Have a forum set up ready to go...don't make the same mistake I did this first round *Wink*

~Clear deadlines:
Make the deadline irrefutable. Leaving nothing to chance or guess. Midnight of October 31st. Is that 12am on November 1st or 12am on October 31st? Many hosts will make the submission deadline for 11:59pm on the ending date so as to be no room for error. Another good thing to add is what standard of time is being used. A general rule of thumb is that by using WDC or writing dot com time line then there can be no questions as to when the item should be submitted.

Ask & Answer

In most contests there is usually someone who will ask or email the question "How do I post in bitem format?"

Here is one place to find the answer to that question: "Invalid Item"   by A Guest Visitor
