I hope you are all feeling inspired, despite the beautiful changes of the season and the joy of knowing sun and warmth are just around the corner. Since we are on the topic of rebirth, I think I’ll point out something else that is allegedly on the rise.  |

I could scarcely believe my eyes or my luck last month when “The Rite” hit the theaters. I am a huge fan of Sir Anthony Hopkins and his work as an actor. Add to that the fact that he was playing a priest afflicted by demonic possession, and I was in seventh heaven! He was brilliant onscreen as the chilling, yet debonair Hannibal Lecter, brought to life from Thomas Harris’s books. I think I’m even a huge fan of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy because he reminds me so much of this actor and his mannerisms, but I digress. The movie, and Sir Hopkins’ portrayal of Father Lucas Trevant did not disappoint.
As unsettling as certain aspects of the movie were, and as heart-stopping, perhaps the most troublesome was knowing Trevant is a fictional character, based on Father Gary Thomas whose life- story the movie is supposed to resemble. Thomas is a priest and Vatican approved exorcist, and he along with two other exorcists acted as advisors to director Mikael Hafstrom.
 Real-life? Let’s examine some of the facts presented along with “The Rite.”
 In January 1999, the Vatican issued a revised Catholic rite of exorcism for the first time since 1614, essentially reaffirming that Satan exists. The new rules call for church- approved exorcists to consult modern medicine and to rule out the possibility of a mental or physical disorder.
Experts say the number of exorcists and exorcisms has increased across the country in the last 10 years.
There are over 50 official active exorcists practicing in the US alone. Chicago's archdiocese has one official exorcist. New York City's diocese has four, including the Rev. James J. LeBar, its chief exorcist.
I don’t know. The thought of losing control of your own body is terrifying enough. To lose it to something so vile…something bent on destroying you from the inside out…these things truly should be left to fiction and fiction alone. It’s not about religion and belief that makes it horrifying. It’s the invasion, the helplessness, the absolute power wielded over a victim assailed by an invisible opponent. To me, that is the stuff real nightmares are made of.
So spring is on the way to being in full bloom. Temperatures are on the rise, and so is evil. What better time to write a little horror and indulge in the dark side. See you all there.

Thanks for the checklist on how to up the horror in a novel/story/scene. I especially appreciated the example you used of the shopping expedition and the demonic homeless man. It sounded like a very frightening scene. Best of luck with your WIP!
