“Writing in English is the most ingenious torture devised for sins committed in previous lives.” James Joyce
I just have to agree with James Joyce sometimes. Writing can be torture when I’m not feeling inspired and motivated. Sometimes a prompt can draw fresh and interesting ideas out of me and onto the page, jumpstarting my sleeping muse.
Joyce’s words inspired me to share an idea for ending the torture of writer’s block when beginning a new piece. You may notice that I base each of my For Authors Newsletters on a quotation. This gives me some structure and a direction to go when faced with a blank page and a deadline. Getting started is the hard part and there are many topics that can come out of a single sentence. Here, let me show you what I mean.
“The appetite grows by what it feeds on.” Albert D. Richardson. What do you see in this quote? You could write about a virus, drug addiction, cheating, love, obesity, control… the list is endless.
Let’s try one more. “A man who will not die for something is not fit to live.” Martin Luther King Jr. There is a lot here. You could write about Martin Luther King Jr.; about his life, teachings, family, faith, sacrifices, convictions, and accomplishments. The reasons people die is another subject, as well as what causes are worthy of death. Judgment and advice and who is allowed to give them out could be addressed.
Your Challenge This Month:
I challenge myself as I’m challenging you. I’ll share my story behind participating in this challenge in my next issue. Please share your story by emailing me or writing in the comments box at the bottom of the newsletter.
Sit down for ten minutes and write down topics that come to mind when you think about this quote.

I love reading aloud. Mostly, in quiet times with God, I read scripture aloud. There is always something different for me in it!

That’s a great idea for a topic. Unfortunately, I know very little about publishing on demand. Would you like to write an article defending it? If so, I’d be happy to share it in my next issue of the newsletter.
