Swimming The Internet
My family tells me all the time, I'm about a decade behind when it comes to finding cool stuff on the internet. Frankly, I don't normally follow every crazy link suggested on social media or sidebar ads. I do my thing and ignore anything that remotely seems phishy or just plain crazy. Until now.
I had some quiet time over the holiday week and since I was caught up on my housework (for once) I had time to putter around on the web. I decided I would look around for some new music for my iPod, some great stuff for workouts. So I hop over to YouTube and start clicking. You all know what happens when you start clicking...you fall down the rabbit hole of links and find yourself surfacing a few hours later with little memory of what happened and a good recipe for dog biscuits.
This time I fell into the paranormal rabbit hole. Okay, not necessarily paranormal, but some freaky photos and videos clips. Photos taken and later discovered to have people in them that weren't there for the shot. Or videos of security camera clips that have bizarre things happen. One was of a man strolling out of a building and hit by lightning. He recovers slowly and starts to walk toward the street, only to be hit a second time! I was pretty sure I watched the guy die, but he recovers again and stumbles toward the street before the clip ended.
Then I kept clicking, all these dark five and top ten videos of whatever the topic chosen. Freaky but fascinating. While I'm sure many them are fabricated hoaxes, some really can't be explained. But while watching, the writer demon on my shoulder kept poking me in the ear and whispering how this would make a good scene in a story. How true!
So the next time you're willing to lose a few hours and do some fun clicking for story ideas, try videos. You might even end up finding some good music.  Write on!

Excerpt: Years ago, when my daughter moved out of our house, she left behind a very fluffy, part Persian cat named Misty. The cat kept hanging around outside my house, so I took pity on her and brought her inside, got a litter box, etc. I'm a dog lover and am not crazy about cats, but she was absolutely the sweetest cat I've ever been around.

Excerpt: Pierre LeBeau, le Capitaine, Duc de Montblanc, loved the way he looked in his military uniform. The gold braid on his epaulettes twinkled in the candlelight as it shimmied when he turned his shoulders to and fro. The fine cut of his jaw and his face’s delicate bone structure contrasted with his narrow waist and broad shoulders. There was no doubt in his mind that he would be the best dressed and most handsome man at the royal ball. Why, even the king couldn’t compete with his looks. That was part of the reason he was going tonight. That and he had been ordered to attend.

Excerpt: It was hard to imagine what this place had once been. It was massive in its layout, and if you watched closely you'd swear that you could see all the people that used to work here moving around just doing what they did. There was furniture everywhere, most of it being the type of stuff you'd find in an office setting. This place had been abandoned for a pretty long while, and the absence of clocks or even calendars lent the place a spooky vibe of having been stuck in time. A snapshot from 30 years ago.

Excerpt: "Halloween party at the rec center tonight!" A ghost yelled, as the bell for Frightful Heights High School signaled the end of the day.
Everyone cheered and went home to prepare for the party. Guy ghouls changed their sheets to look fresh for the lady ghosts, and the ladies put on their most frightful frocks to impress the guys.
When the ghosts and ghouls arrived at the rec center, there were shadows on the floor. "Ghosts don't give shadows" said Molly Geist.
Excerpt: The scene is simple: a young man sits at a Formica table in a concrete grey room. On the table, out of reach, are a glass of water and a jug for refills. Watching through the mirror near the door are two men. They've been standing there over half an hour.
I am the young man at the table and I know there are watchers because I can sense them. David has good control of his emotions; beyond knowing he's there I can't get a bead on him. The unknown man, however, is running out of patience. Serves them right, I think, staring at the black table top. It's the middle of the night and I'm here in pyjamas and bare feet because they hadn't given me time to collect myself.
Excerpt: As soon as they entered the kitchen, they discovered the source of the awful odor. Lying on the floor near the open refrigerator was a pile of dirty gray ashes. The powdery black ashes were in the form of a burned human body. The arms and head and torso were fully outlined, the legs curled up in the fetal position. Most astonishing of all was that part of one leg from just above the ankle, including the shoe, was untouched by the flames. Also, the right hand lay unburned at the top of the pile of ashes. Attached to the wrist of the hand was Grandma Bella’s bracelet they had given to her last Christmas.
Excerpt: Everyone has a little voice in their head. Mine happens to be my twin sister, Jude, who died last year. Grief transcends the theory of time, and every day feels like the day she died. I know she's helping me write the book, but it's not like the words disappear when we're not working together. Jude? With my fingers drumming on the desk top, I will the story to return but Sybil and Mick have disappeared, taking my plot hostage. Ian Blake, Mick's assistant remains aloof, the bisexual Holly turns away—even the dependable Daphne refuses to speak. My sister's right. Sans her professional editorial help, I falter. I wonder, not for the first time, if she's working through me to complete a book her abrupt demise interrupted.

Last month's question: Do you research for your action / adventure stories?
benjwriter14 responded: I don't know how you couldn't research for action/adventure. Just because the pace may be elevated compared to other genres, that doesn't mean the details are any less important. In fact most, most action adventure stories involve some element of history, a quest to uncover the McGuffin that's been lost for a thousand years, or perhaps science is the backdrop for the action. You need to get the details right. Even if you don't have history or science to contend with, then you need to know what kind of gun he's wielding and how it works, or the type of helicopter he's flying to save the stranded family from the edge of the volcano. I almost think it's an odd question to ask. As a writer, research is essential no matter what genre it is.
GaelicQueen  advises: Google search is my friend. When I want to describe a certain type of building I look through pictures posted via Google. If I need to know certain call numbers (as in police radio codes), put in a search request and bookmark several for study later.
