I’m Andy~hating university , and I’m your guest editor this week for the Horror/Scary Newsletter.
Before I get to the Newsletter, I'd like to once again congratulate each and every single Quill nominee, finalist, HM, and winner. I'd also like to say a special congratulations to those members who won their very first Quill.
With the 30th anniversary of the publication of IT by Stephen King only a few months ago, and with the original miniseries based on the novel first scaring audiences just over 26 years ago, I have been thinking about the new film based on the novel that is finally coming out in September this year.
People have their own reasons for thinking of IT as the jewel in Stephen King's crown. The book is one of King's most complex works, with layers and layers of stories within stories within plots within subplots; even the natural and supernatural worlds of the book are tightly wound around each other. When I was in college, we even had a debate over whether the main plot of the novel was about the Loser's Club fight against Pennywise, or the Loser's Club natural lives in Derry.
This remake has been about a decade in the making and has been fraught with changes in both cast and crew - there have been two directors, changes in scriptwriter, three or four Pennywises before Bill Skarsgård successfully held onto the role, and Finn Wolfhard, who plays Richie Tozier, was the only one of the seven Losers to stay with the film after the change in director.
The film coming out this year is part one, yet rater shockingly, part two has as yet not been signed off for production. I’m not really a fan of remakes in general, but I loathe horror remakes as I’ve never seen one I’ve ever liked and find they are often worse than the original.
In the case of IT, I wasn’t a fan of the original miniseries for a number of reasons. Although it was packed with big names of the era, such as Jonathon Brandis, Seth Green, Tim Curry, and Annette O’Toole to name but a few, far too much of the book was cut out and rewritten for it to truly make sense to people who had never read the book.
When you have an original that was average to begin with, I have high hopes for the remake - even more so, as Stephen King has seen the new IT and given it a ringing endorsement. A big-budget, big-screen movie surely has to outstrip the original made-for-TV. The trailer looks good, and what’s been shown of the opening scene remains pretty true to the book.
I’m certainly not expecting to see the entire book in the film. King himself has always asserted that a faithful scene-by-scene script of IT would lead to a twenty-four-hour movie, so it will be interesting to see what has been cut from the book.
The film certainly promises to be much darker than the original, largely evidenced by its anticipated R-rating in the US, as opposed to the original’s PG-13 rating. The R-rating is more in keeping with the content of the book, so it does hint as to what scenes might be included that were omitted from the original. Likewise, the fact the film is not expected to receive an NC-17 rating, also suggests what will definitely be cut out.
