a little something I wrote after my daughter's first day of kindergarten.
3 pounds 2 ounces and
No bigger than my palm
Fighting for every breath
With tubes coming in and
Out of your tiny body. I
Never knew I could love so much.

You pulled through your
Struggle stronger than ever
With each passing day your
Hold on my heart grows a little
Stronger. You amaze me
More and more every second.

From Elmo to Dora the
Explorer to Cinderella, we’ve
Made it through it all together.
Countless tea parties and hours
Spent polishing fingernails; we’ve
Made it through you and me.

On your first day of preschool,
I was there to comfort you when
You shed your tears. Now, that
You’ve made it all the way to
Kindergarten it is your turn to
Comfort me as I begin to let go.

Though my love for you will
Only grow stronger, it is the
Time to let you grow. It’s
Your chance to begin to spread
Your wings and see were you’ll
Fly in the gigantic big world.

It’s a long journey, my little
Lady Bug. Along the way you’ll
Experience many laughs and
Even some tears. You’ll have
First loves and heartache to, but
Remember I’ll always be here for you.

Keep your chin up and reach for
The stars. Take the time to
Appreciate the small things in
Life. Remember whatever you
Set your mind to you can do
And you’ll always be my world.
