This poem is about what it's like when you're waiting for someone to go to war.
I need to get this down on paper
Before it's just too late
If I don't get it down, now, tonight
My whole life I'll have to wait
I don't want to see him go
It means my heart's gone too
What I'll do without him
I wish I only knew
I know I'll think a lot about it
And his letters they will come
But will I open them, that is the question
All the factors equal an unlikely sum
This is our first summer
But also it's our last
I have to do my best
And stop living in the past
He's leaving in September
It's not my choice to make
He doesn't know I love him
And I won't tell him for his sake
My worst fear, he won't come back
Shot dead in that hellish place
My soldier, he's going to fight in the war
So this summer's not a summer, more like a race
