When addiction invades a family, even the monster in the closest needs to be scared...
Monster in the Closet

I spotted a little monster in my wife’s closest tonight.
He was pale white and tiny, but I caught a small glimpse of him as he scuttled into one of her shoes.
He had dreamy eyes and little razor like claws that snapped shut like sharpened vises.

He seemed to be smiling, but you could tell it was really a sneer.
He was carrying a little blue pencap like a sword in his hand. Did he really think he could use that as a weapon? I think he was trying to hurt some other little things in my house. I just hope he doesn’t get into the kids room.

I’m surprised she didn’t see him, not sure if he would have scared her or maybe she would have thought he was cute?

I told her about the little monster today
She said she knew.
Actually she let him in the house. I was really surprised.
I don’t know why she wasn’t scared of him.
She said her brother had one just like him and he was ok. So I let her keep him.

Sometimes when I am about to goto sleep I see her petting him in her closest.
She even made a little bed for him. With bits of plastic and little pillows made of folded up dollar bills. He seems to find it warm and cozy in the closet.
She is always whispering little secrets in her ear. I wonder what she is telling him. I’m getting kinda jealou.s . I wish I knew what they were talking about.
I don’t really like the little thing but sometimes I go in there and pet him too. He is kinda fun, and I don’t want to be left out. The next day I really don’t like looking at him though. He makes me feel a little sick.

One night last week, I heard a little scream . I peeked into the cracked door of her lit closet and saw him standing on her chest. She was laying down on the floor and crying. The little monster was staring down at her and laughing . An itsy bitsy, tiny, evil little laugh. But I was afraid to go in their and stop him. She seemed to love him so much.
I hope she doesn’t love him more than me.

My wife met some new people and they like to come over and see the little monster too. They also pet him sometimes and for some reason they like him. I must be missing something because I really don’t think these new people are her friends. I think they are using her just so they can pet her little monster.

It’s been a few weeks now and my wife seems not to be able to sleep anymore. She just keeps thinking about the little monster. I really have to do something about this. I don’t even go in there and pet him anymore. I think tomorrow Ill call the exterminator maybe they can tell me how to get rid of the monster.

I didn’t call today. I really don’t want to hurt my wife and get rid of the little thing. She seems to love him so much. But tonight she cried to me in bed. He kept scratching at her closet door as she cried. He really is starting to make me mad. She told me that she had been playing with the little monster more then I had thought. During the day, late at night. after I went to bed. she even took him for rides with her in her car. But she didn’t have that smile on her face anymore when she was talking about the monster. Seems he was making her sick. She wants him to go away. She says he’s becoming a problem.

Today she took a ride over to the exterminator to speak to them about how to get rid of the little monster. But she called me from the car and told me not to get rid of him yet. She didn’t know if it was the right thing to do.

I went up to her closet. He was just sitting there panting. He seemed to be very busy. He left a mess in every one of her shoes. I tried to grab him but he was quite elusive. Finally I got a hold of him. He squirmed a lot and even tried to bite me. But for some reason he couldn’t break my skin. Funny, how he could break my wife’s skin, but not mine. I opened up the toilet lid and looked at him in my palm.
Then I looked at him again.
I don’t know what my wife saw in this little ugly thing. It was really easy to flush him. He screamed a lot and I laughed at him as he swirled down the bowl.

My wife came home and I told her I got rid of the little ugly monster, She was oddly happy. The exterminator told her it would take some work to really get rid of him all together and he might come back some day. She seemed quite determined to keep him out.

Sometimes I hear him scratching at our window. He really wants to come back in. But for now the windows are all locked shut tight. Every day the scratching gets a little less. I think eventually it will just be a whisper. I hope so. Because we really need some sleep.

My wife is a lot happier now, even without her little monster. At first I thought it was like having my old wife back. But I realized she had changed. Oddly enough, she was stronger. Better somehow. Sometimes I can tell she misses her little monster. But now instead of going into her closet to look for him, she walks downstairs to our children’s rooms and gives them little kisses. I think she now knows we already have three wonderful little monsters. And there is no room for the one in her closet.
