An entry for the ABN Contest, March 2009-- My friendship with nEkO!!
Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

I've never fancied being in front of crowds. I guess it's because of my shy nature. Sure, I'm the lead singer of a well-known band now. Not to mention, I just released my first solo album a week ago. Still, I can't help but feel a little queasy. My favorite talk show will begin in a few minutes... and I'm in it!

I'm standing on the back stage of America's #1 talk show, "One-Winged Angels" hosted by two of the most popular ladies in the world of entertainment. What's adding more to my already nervous state, is remembering that only three days ago, they interviewed my Angel Buddy, Neko about her new book. Now, here I am about to be bombarded by questions about my new album and my friendship with Neko. I wonder who's going to be the next Angel Buddy pair they're going to feature here...

Oops! The stage manager is giving me the sign, which means I need to come out of my 'hiding place' right this instant. Now, Mari, calm down. You can do this. Breathe!

I walked shakily towards the stage door, plastering a nervous smile on my face. Wow! This feels like our band's first gig when we were just beginners. Ugh! I do hope I won't vomit like back then. Beyond the 'door of doom' blinding lights and deafening rounds of applause greeted me. A sense of pride, joy and excitement came rushing through me all at once. I wonder, did Neko felt like this too?

Mara, looking as gorgeous as ever in her white off-shoulder dress designed by Donna Karan gave me a friendly smile before shaking my hand. Beside her, wearing a sexy and glamorous black halter dress by Versace is her best friend and co-host, Adriana who shook my hand softly. They both gave off a very welcoming aura. Somehow, I think I'm no longer feeling nauseous.

"Welcome, Mari! I heard from Adriana that you're an avid fan of our show. How does it feel to be part of this right now?" Whew! Good thing they started this with an easy question. "First off, thank you for having me here today. This is like a dream come true for me. Even though I'm not confident talking and facing a huge number of people, being in your show makes me happy." I answered sincerely.

"Now, let's get to the juicy part! Tell us about your inspiration for your solo album." Adriana said excitedly. "Adriana is in high tension today. You know, last night she was listening to the free CD you gave us during the pre-interview." Mara said, laughing. "Well, I wasn't the only one feeling all emotional after hearing, The True Friend and You Told Me!" Her partner-in-crime replied, pouting like a little girl, making the audience crack up. I can't help but grin, watching how close they are and how much they enjoy each other's company. It reminds me of my friendship with Neko.

"Oh dear, this show isn't for us. Sorry about that, Mari." Mara turned to me, a hint of pink on her cheeks. I heard she doesn't wear make-up so I'm pretty sure she's blushing. "This album was inspired by all the people who has been a part of my life, a part of me. One of those people is Neko, a very important friend who I met all thanks to the Angel Buddy program. The title "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow speaks of the memories I've shared with everyone, the ones I'm making with them at present and what we will be experiencing together from now onwards."

"Perfect title for the album! Now, I heard that, You Told Me is on the top of the music charts today and that it's a song you wrote for Neko. Can you tell us more about it?" Mara asked eagerly.

"Well, when Neko and I first met online, she made an image just for the two of us! I really wanted to write a poem for her in return. But I never finished it. So, when ABN hosted a contest for buddies to get to know each other better and prove it to everyone. I decided to write a song about her... I think I found it easier to write a song for her rather than a poem because I've always thought of her as someone who would be a good match with music. The chorus part of the song was something I've put together out of her 'motto' and the things she told me every time I feel unsure of my works and unconfident of myself. The other parts are more on how we met online and in real life." One of my habits: I tend to stare blankly at nothing, like sort of in a trance-like state when I'm caught up telling a story or explaining. I carefully shifted my gaze back to the hosts and was startled to see them grinning from ear to ear.

Oh yeah! They're buddies too! I guess it shouldn't be much of a surprise how they understand perfectly well what I was trying to say in the song. It makes me smile, thinking how similar they are to us, when it comes to friendship, that is. I'm pretty sure, my achievements and Neko's still can't reach theirs.

"It's nice to know that you two are really good friends up until now. There are some buddies that have drifted apart because of their careers after all." Mara said with a smile. "Yeah, it's great hearing from you and Neko, that even though you've chosen different paths to follow, you still remain connected." Adriana added.

"I'm happy about that myself. I never imagined finding a person who I have so much in common with when it comes to interests but is also somewhat the opposite of my personality. Neko is a really kind-hearted person. She'll help anyone who needs it, no questions necessary. She looks at people using her heart, not simply judging them through outside appearances. She's also a very good listener. Whenever I have problems she's always there, staying until I've poured out all of my sadness and frustrations. However, as is the case with all of us, she's got some weaknesses as well. She's caring but sometimes she worries too much and stresses over things easily. And sure, she can be really sweet and innocent but when it's necessary, she can tell a lie and convince everyone it's the truth."

"Cool talent! Wish I can do that too." Adriana said. "Yeah, you really need to practice your skills, covering up when you do something wrong." Mara said, making the audience laugh. They really act like little kids sometimes and they don't even care where they are. Shows how comfortable they are around each other.

"Ahem, Mara, we're drifting away from the topic again... Why don't we begin the questioning now?"

         "Okay, are you ready, Mari?"

"Fire away. It's going to be about the things I know regarding Neko, right?"

"Yes, now for your first question, Adriana will start first."

"Her usual handle for writing is Neko,
But her real and full name, do you know?"

"Jacqueline Colleen Pierce." I heard a 'ding' sound out of nowhere and the number 1 blinking in the scoreboard.

"I guess that was too easy, Adriana. I'll ask the next one."

"You two are the closest of friends 'til the end,
But who is her first and foremost very best friend?"

"I know that too. Hmm, Samantha! Her older sister, right?"

"Great answer! Now, I wonder if you can answer the next one right away."

"Not too keen on playing anything, but her favorite sport to watch,
LSU Tigers, there can be no match!
         What sport is it?"

"Football...? American Football!" That was close. As far as I know, others refer to soccer as football too. American football is way different! I heard a 'ding' sound again. Two more questions to go!

"Fourth question: Neko is a writer born with a mission,
When she was still a beginner, what was her ambition?"

"Every writer dreams of this of course! She wanted to get something she has written published. That one came true already. But she also wants to finish her novel, 'The Sword of the Goddesses Chosen'. She's planning to think up of a shorter title once she's done with the finishing touches. I'm not sure though, if she's really going to change it. I think she's quite fond of that title herself. No matter how long it is."

"You answered all the questions perfectly. I bet it makes Neko happy too, knowing you know her really well. Proves how close you are!" Mara said, a soft smile gracing her lips.

"Last but not the least! Now, as host, I think Mara should ask this."

"Okay, then. Can you tell us what her greatest dream is,
Aside from attaining the highest of bliss?"

I know that one! But wait... Neko can be a really complicated person sometimes. I'm sure she'll give a different answer than what I'm thinking right now. Take a deep breath, relax and just tell them how you think she'll answer if she was here. "There are times in life when people get extremely depressed and because of the things happening around them, they tend to look at themselves in a way lacking of their original value. She's been through that phase before, and there are still times she feels that way. Her greatest dream is, to become someone who can be proud of herself no matter what, and to love herself more than anyone else can. She's a very honest and loving person. Even if she tries to hide it, her emotions will show when in front of the people she cares about. That's why, she wants to be happy and be proud of herself... because only then can she make the ones around her smile, too."

The studio was filled with silence, the two hosts holding each others hand, waiting whether there's still something I'd like to add. But there was nothing more to be said. As much as an open and trusting person Neko is, everyone enjoys privacy too! Besides, with just those words, I'm sure they get her now.

The silence was broken by the thunderous clapping of the audience. I can feel my face heating up. Sheesh! I really hate this much attention... But I'm happy. I've always wanted everyone to know about how great Neko is and how wonderful it is to find a friend you can share everything with.

         "Such heart-warming words, Mari!"

"Yeah, Mara's right! I'm sure Neko's somewhere watching this and bawling her eyes out!" Adriana said with a laugh.

"Before we say goodbye, let's give it up again for Mari. She's going to sing, "You Told Me. The song especially dedicated to her friend, Jackie!"

Look forward in life
Stand up and don’t just cry
And if ever you fall
I’ll be there by your side
Believe in me, things will get better

Things will get better...

'Cause, you told me
Look forward in life
Just tell me why you cry
If ever you feel hurt
I’ll surely make you smile
Believe in me, things will get better
(You have me and I have you)
Until the end we’ll have each other!

"Thank you for tuning in everyone! I am your gorgeous host, Mara McBain,"

"and I am the sexy and glamorous co-host, Adriana Noir,"

"both of us signing off, wishing everyone a love filled day!"
