I am a junior in high school. This is a opinion piece I was required to publish.

                                            Education: Down the Drain

Education is an essential key in our society, to advance our nation as well as to enhance a person’s individual life.  The power that results from learning provides people with the ability to succeed.  Working hard for an education will provide you with many opportunities you wouldn’t be able to obtain otherwise.  In my opinion, the schooling system as a whole is slacking.  When I think about the flaws of student education I can name a more than a few issues that should be improved.

The main issue I feel should be fixed is school funding.  In order to have structure within the system, you need to have a large amount of financial support.  Instead of the government focusing on silly things they need to recognize the most important thing, education.  They do obviously fund the education system, but to me it’s just not enough, especially in public schooling.  The more money each individual school has its budget, the greater the opportunity to learn.  Particularly more money should go into technology, because our nation is becoming more advanced, and schools need to grow with it.  Also more money needs to be put into out-of-the classroom educational experiences.  The more the students get out into the world and see things in person, the more they learn.  Funding needs to become a huge priority, to set the American students apart.

Many issues I believe need to be changed referring to teachers.  They are the ones who are responsible for educating the students.  They build the young people into who they will be in the future.  The first problem would be that they definitely are under paid.  They spend multiple years in college to get their degree, and their salary falls below the average, which doesn't seem right at all.  Also teachers are some of the smartest people I know, so they should be paid accordingly.  The second problem is that their just isn’t a big enough supply of teachers, which is most likely a result of the low salary they are paid.  The more teachers we have the smaller the classes can be.  The smaller the classes can be the more the teachers can personally help a student one on one.  I believe this is another problem we face with schools.

High school is all about expanding your knowledge to prepare you for college.  Though compared to other countries, our classes need to be more vigorous.  Not saying they need to kill us with work, but it would just be good if we were pushed to what we are capable of.  Most kids though have become used to having breaks and not doing much work, and this has caused him to be very lazy when it comes to school work.  Kids are thus starting to drop out, and dropout rates have climbed to almost 20 percent.  Teachers should also make kids think more critically because anyone can copy answers out of the book.  Unfortunately this year I only have a couple of classes that make me work to my full ability.

The educational system is crumbling every year that goes by that they fail to address these problems.  They need to be fixed on a local level and a national level.  A child's education is what determines their future.  Honestly right now, kids are not that interested in their future, at least they don’t show it through their work.  We need to get kids more interested in going to school and make them understand what a great education will do for them.  If more improvements are made you will see a change in success rates among children.  After all, isn’t that what everyone wants?
