This is a poem about being yourself
I’m staring in the mirror
But all I see is everyone else
Is this really me?
Cause I don’t even recognize myself
I take a closer look
In the mirror I began to stare
But I remain confused
Cause the image is still there
All I see is everyone else
Everyone that I try to be
All but one person
I don’t see me
What is going on?
Where am I at?
Then I spotted this image
In the corner he sat
His back was turned
And his head hung down
I called my name
And quickly he responded to the sound
He hollered out Help me!
I am beginning to wither away
Listening to him closely
Listen to every word he had to say
Why are you doing this?
Are you ashamed of me?
Ashamed of the person
That you are really supposed to be?
You are playing this game
And didn’t count up the cost
And if you continue playing
I will be lost
You won’t remember who you are
Because I would have died
And you would go through life
Living one big lie
So don’t play this game
This game of pretend
Don’t forget who you really are
Just to have a friend
I continued to stare in the mirror
Then I closed my eyes
But this time when I opened them
I seen a face I recognized
