a short story i had to write for a class
“ I found it,” yelled Jessie as everyone ran to her. There it was, the perfect game Candy City. We were at the Toy’s”R”Fun toy store looking for the perfect something to waste a boring Saturday afternoon. Tommy grabbed the game from the display, and headed for the checkout. When we finally got to the cash register the cashier said very suspiciously “ Are you sure you want to buy this?” “Yes.” Tommy replied almost instantly. The cashier started to scan it, but stopped and thrust it into Tommy’s hands. “Here it’s free, now get out!” She said shoving us out and slamming to door closed.
Later that day at Jessie’s house, Chole ripped open the long rectangular box and dumped out all the pieces while saying “Guys come here and help me get it ready.” Every one crowded around the table and started to it put together. After Candy City had been assembled, we chose our game pieces Chole a spring, Tommy a book of wisdom, Cane a laser gun, and Jessie a rope. We lined our pieces up at the start. We studied the board and our eyes fell on one space six spaces from the start. We all wondered what it meant but no one asked. “ I call first!” yelled Chole reaching for the card pile. The card read “ To play this game you have to accept that this is real” “I accept!” we all yelled in unison. Chole picked up the dice and rolled a three “Ha! Beat that!” she challenged. “Oh, I will” said Jessie as she reached for a card. It read “Once you enter this game there is no turning back. She picked up a dice and rolled a four. Tommy was a little scared when she started having flashbacks about what the cards said. She snapped out of it quickly picked up a card and read “Turn back now”. Tommy rolled the dice and got a five, only one space from the weird marking, we still had no idea what it meant. Cane picked up the card, handed it to Tommy, and looked in the box for directions. There were no directions in the box all that there was in there was Jessie’s most prized possession, a baby doll named Bobby Joe. Cane looked confused as to why there weren’t any directions. He rolled the dice and Tommy started reading his card “ Its to late now”. The dice landed on a six, he looked around, everybody’s eyes were wide. He moved his piece when he landed on the mystery symbol the world started spinning, every color one could imagine started coming into the swirling world. One person at a time got sucked in to the large hole opening in the floor. First Cane, then Tommy, and just before Jessie and Chole got sucked in, Jessie grabbed Bobby Joe.
The further in the swirling tunnel we went, the further it seemed we got dragged away from reality. Finally, after what seemed like weeks, we were spat out on to the soft grass of a meadow. But the weird thing was, this wasn’t any kind of meadow that we were used to, the grass was sticky, and smelled faintly like sugar. Jessie, who had fallen on her back, picked herself up looked around and found Tommy and Chole. “ Hey guys do you know where Bobby Joe and Cane went? And do you know where we are?” asked Jessie as she was helping her two friends up. “I have absolutely no idea” said Tommy brushing stray bits of sticky sweet grass off her blue jeans. When we were all on our feet, we looked around the strange world, very confused. The strange place was very colorful and bright compared to Jessie’s dim media room. The river had been filled with chocolate, flowers were all shapes and colors of candy. Blue and pink cotton candy clouds floated in the crystal blue sky. The inhabitants of this place were the M&M people. “Umm, if we’re going to start looking for Cane and Bobby Joe, lets start over there.” said Tommy pointing to a tall dark mountain, breaking the long dead silence. We started walking to the mountain, not having one idea what was waiting for us on the other side.
When we finally got to the base of the mountain, a red M&M stepped out in front of us. “Are you girls sure you want to go up there?” he asked. Now Tommy was annoyed, she pushed past the M&M, mumbled under her breath something like “yes”, and disappeared into the black misty forest. Jessie and Chole quickly followed her. During their trek up the mountain Jessie and Chole yelled “CANE! BOBBY JOE! WHERE ARE YOU!”. By the time we reached the top of the mountain, our hair was strung together with sweat, our faces red from walking up the mountain. Chole and Jessie’s throat hurt from yelling. When we caught our breath, we looked back at the way we came, the same happy scene we saw in the meadow, only smaller from the altitude. Suddenly, a loud explosion from behind made us turn around. “Oh my gosh!” exclaimed Tommy, her voice almost masked by the roar of the flames from the bomb. The meadow behind the mountain had just been bombed, and was going up in flames fast. The chocolate bunnies scrambled to get to the mountain before the flames got them. Then out of the charcoal black smoke came an army of gummy bears. As they were marching, a familiar voice surfaced from the crackling flames. “SEARCH EVERYWHERE! DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU FIND THAT LITTLE PIECE OF PLASTIC JESSIE CALLS BOBBY JOE!” commanded Cane. We ran for the nearest thing to shelter, a boulder. “What does Bobby Joe have to do with this?” asked Jessie. “Maybe that could tell us” Chole said reaching for a scrap of silver paper wedged under the boulder. The note read:

“Does anyone no gibberish?” asked Chole. “Let me see” Tommy said snatching the paper out of Chole’s hands. “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.” read Tommy. “Again, what does Bobby Joe have to do with this?” Jessie asked, her voice rising. “Maybe Cane knows.” Said Chole. “Wait, ssh sh sh,” said Tommy. We could hear the sound of gummy bears marching toward us. We waited till they passed, still managing to stay hidden. Then we swiftly followed them making sure to stay behind the army and Cane at a safe distance. We followed them back to the meadow where we had arrived. When they stopped we darted behind a tree. “What are they doing?” Asked Jessie. “I don’t know, I can’t hear what he’s saying.” replied Chole. By the time they had stopped talking, Cane and his army had crossed the river and Tommy was standing at the edge of the chocolate river. “ Did you hear what he said?” Tommy asked as Chole and Jessie joined her. “No, we were hoping you did.” said Jessie hanging her head. We stood there for a minute, when Chole started backing up, “Chole what are you doing?” Asked Tommy. “I wanna try something.” replied Chole. She stopped, and ran as fast as she could to the river bed, jumped, and missed the other side. Jessie tried to reach for Chole’s hand but her arms where to short. After several attempts, all hope of saving Chole were lost. Then suddenly, out of thin air flew a gigantic life saver. Chole grabbed on to it and started eating it. When, they finally had Chole out of the river all covered in chocolate, we turned around and saw a ten foot tall chocolate bunny. After we stared, gapping, he hopped away. “ I got it!” exclaimed Tommy. “Got what?’ Jessie and Chole asked in unison. “Just watch.” Tommy said turning towards the other side of the river. “AVADA KEDAVRA!” she shouted. Then out of nowhere a chocolate bridge appeared before them. We quickly ran across it and just as fast as it had appeared it had disappeared. “How did you figure that out?” asked Chole as we started down the trail of trampled plants. “I have no idea.” Tommy said flatly. When we got to the end of the path, the sight shocked us. A huge fortress, surrounded by concrete walls topped with barbed wire. Gummy bears guarded every entrance. There were distant footsteps getting closer but we didn’t notice. Then before what we knew what was happening, gummy bears in knight armor surrounded us, weapons aimed. Inch by inch they made their way in between us separating us, enclosing us by ourselves. Then in an instant (as if there hasn’t already been enough instant events) Cane was ordering the gummy bears to hold their fire. A sigh of relief came out of Tommy’s mouth, Jessie and Chole stood frozen in place. “Where have you hidden Bobby Joe?” Tommy said being the only one who could gather enough courage to speak. “Ha! You think I’m going to tell you where I hid that little piece of plastic. Please even if I told you, you could never find the super secret cell in the basement made of pop rock filled chocolate, that could explode any minute now.” he said thinking he sounded evil and hadn’t given away a scrap of information. Before anyone could say anything Tommy exploded into hysterical laughter. “you….. just… told…. us…” Tommy said in between breaths. At this point Jessie became furious and shouted “ GIVE ME BOBBY JOE NOW!”. Then she broke down in furious sobs. While Chole tried to calm Jessie down from her spot five feet away, Tommy negotiated with Cane. “How’s this, you send away all the gummy bears except your two best fighters, that way it will be a fair fighting ground,” she said, “You can use what ever you want as long as it’s candy.”. “Fine, 5021 and 7052 stay, everyone else go back to your positions.” When all the gummy bears had left, we saw the two we had to fight, the two largest gummy bears, one red and one clear. After what seemed like forever of no one moving, “Well, don’t just stand there, FIGHT!” Cane yelled. That instant Tommy grabbed the nearest weapon, a candy cane and cut the leg of the red gummy bear off. Jessie and Chole followed Tommy and cut off the red one’s other leg. That one was down. Just as they were about to face the large clear gummy bear, the world started spinning, colors swirling, engulfing all of us. We all woke up startled. We looked around, everything was still intact, the game sitting on the coffee table looking like it had never been touched. When they got to their feet, they all started speaking at once. “Did we all have the same dream?” asked Cane when everyone had fell silent. “I think we did, from what it sounds like.” Jessie said. “ Um, how long were we out?” asked Chole. “ Two hours.” Tommy said looking at her watch. “I guess that means we have to go,” Cane said pulling Tommy toward the door. We all said an awkward good-bye, and went our separate ways. But some where in the back of our minds we all wondered if our dreams were real.
The End.
