Rhythms of a Poet's Life


The measured beat of life rings in my ears;
a symphony of sound I oft ignore.
It's funny but I know that it's been years
since consciously I've thought about it more.
There was a time when first I would explore
the most familiar things. Those days are past.
I now hear drum beats from a distant shore
and yet, they seem an echo by contrast.
I listen and the rhythm seems to soar
until it settles in my heart once more.

In darkness formed, the gentle rhythms calm
and comfort us as we grow free from sight.
The mother's heartbeat, like a soothing balm,
escorts us on our journey to the light.
Though born of groans and pain, there is delight
in the first breaths, embraced in loving arms
and held against the coming of the night
assured the cadence protects from all harms.
I hear life's tempo flowing as I write;
its subtle presence in words I indite.

Form: Choice – I chose a Decuain invented by our own ShelleyA~13 years at WDC . The Decuain is a short poem made up of 10 lines, which can be written on any subject. There are 10 syllables per line and the poem is written in iambic pentameter. There are 3 set choices of rhyme scheme: ababbcbcaa, ababbcbcbb, or ababbcbccc
