Masterpiece

Sally got up early and ran to the bathroom. Her 5-year-old feet slapped against the hardwood floor as she went. Once inside, she pulled open a drawer that she had seen her mother open many times before, and removed her mother’s make-up bag. Standing on tiptoe, Sally tilted her head back and tried to see her reflection in the mirror. Too Short!

She returned to her room for her toddler chair, slid it out from under her desk and slowly made her way back down the hall. Sally climbed up onto the chair. Perfect! She stared at her face in the mirror and gave herself a mischievous smile.

After taking the bright, red lipstick from her mother’s make-up bag, Sally brushed her hair away from her eyes and began to apply the silky colour to her lips. She ran the stick over her top lip, then the bottom. She turned her head from side to side, while blotting her lips the way she’d seen her mother do. She was so pleased with her masterpiece, even though she hadn’t yet learned to colour within the lines.

Uh oh, footsteps!

Mother’s face appeared in the doorway, eyes wide, mouth open. Sally gave her a huge “I love you, mommy” smile, before her mother exhaled a heavy sigh, turned on her heels, and shaking her head, went back to her room.
