A short poem about waging a battle with substance use disorder
I sink into myself

I crawl out of my skin

I hide from the world

I stay safe within.

They tell me I'm pretty

They all say I'm smart

I've heard that I'm friendly

My mind tears it apart.

My head is so different

I'm not the same

This voice just won't leave me

It fills me with shame.

She speaks in a whisper

She sings in a song

She sounds realistic

When she tells me they're wrong.

I think I can do this

I always fight back

But addictions no quitter

When she wages attack.
