A festive story about the EverBloom family during the Solstice.
Late December, year of the folding swallow.
Through heavy snow, and freezing wind. Underneath the thin limbs of dead trees, walked a lone figure. Their tall frame shrouded beneath a pitch black hooded cloak.
They pushed forward, snow quickly filling the deep cut path behind them.
Once they reached the forest edge, they stopped in place for a few seconds. Then looked straight ahead, taking in the sight of a two story home that rested beyond a large dark brown brick fence with a metal gate at it's center.
Snow and ice clung to the gate's iron bars.
Before continuing, they brushed off a bit of snow, and resumed their movement. As they drew near to the gate, they noticed a garden on its other side.
At least, in the spring and summer, the planters and pots would house flowers. Here in the embrace of winter, they were just another holding vessel for ice, snow and a bitter chill.
Taking hold of the gate, they struggled to pull it open. The blanket of thick snow almost acting as a door stop or similar, causing the figure to move in a sweeping motion. Sending white all around, in a thin veil of mist.
Following this, they stomped their feet then pulled hard on the gates handle.
It still refused to open. Finally they noticed an ice layer on its connecting point. Having grown tired of the gates refusal to open or cooperate. The figure threw open their cloak, pulling forth a handle of an obsidian chroma with a craved bright silver head. Stepping into the swing, they brought it's head against that layer of ice.
Their scythe cut through that thick layer, rending ice into shards. With that taken care of, they opened the gate then made their way along the foot path beyond it.
As their shoes found themselves on frostless ground, they made a slight click. Matching their cloak was a pair of black slip on dress shoes.
Slowly, they walked through the garden, looking around as they went. The area around them was fenced in, into the shape of a square.
Walking along the stone foot path, they noticed a slight glimmer of blue that rose up at their heels. When they saw it, they gave a small nod.
After which, they took a look around the garden. Along the inner wall of the fence ran long strings of lights from one end to the other.
Stopping on both sides just before the gate, they currently sat dark. At the sight, they shook their head in disappointment.
Before heading to the door that sat opposite them, at the far end of the foot path. On both sides of it, small windows looked out. Bright light shining through their panes.
Getting closer to the door, they started to hear the sound of music.
Along side a small voice humming along, when they reached the step. They gave the door a faint series of knocks, causing whoever was humming to stop.
Replying to their knocks with a shout, "Just a second please!" followed by the pitter patter of something small, rushing over to the door. When the door opened, the source of the sounds stood before said figure.
It was a young girl, with bright blue hair. In a dark blue dress that reached just above her knees, her left sleeve was rolled up past her elbow.
She looked up at the figure, who by compression. Towered over her, she then took a few steps back. Still looking up in awe, as the shape stepped forward.
A chilly air flowing from behind them, they reached back and closed the door as they crossed through the boundary. Then, they reached down and took hold of that blue haired girl.
Causing her to let out a scream.
Her shrill sound caught the attention of her father, who heard his daughters call through the near by wall that separated his daughters bedroom from their kitchen.
Without a second thought, he came charging down the hall into their modest sized kitchen. And was met by the sight of the lone figure, clutching his daughter against their chest.
Her father stood firm, his head held straight. Looking into the figure's faintly luminous eyes, that gave off a dark shade of red.
The pair stood, one by the backdoor while the other. Was near the hallway entrance, her father spoke to the figure in a monotone, somewhat tired voice.
"Hello, Dad." as those words slipped past his lips, his father cracked a small smile.
"Hello my son! How have you been? Sorry about Luna, I didn't expect her to be so excited." Luna shook around in her grandfather's embrace, playfully rolling against his forearm.
Stopping to look at her father, "Diddy look, its granddiddy!"
Her father walked over, and gave his daughter a soft pat on the head.
He then turned his gaze upward, meeting his eyes. The old man had a rather, striking visage beneath the faint shadow his hood cast.
Deep set cheeks, that pulled back his lips slightly. Causing his teeth to seem more pronounced. Paired with ashy white skin, it gave his face a skull like quality.
"Dad, I don't mean to be rude. But I really think you should change out of your work uniform." his son said in the same tone, while sporting an expression of worry.
"Ah. Goodness me, I forgot to change at the door, terribly sorry my son. Please exusce me for a moment Luna." gently he placed his granddaughter back on the tile floor.
The man took a deep breath, and exhaled a plume of bright blue fire.
Causing his cloak to disappear, leaving in it's place a much more casual set of clothing. A dark gray sweater, paired with dark blue suit pants. Luna clapped at what she assumed was a trick.
In response, her grandfather took a small bow. "Thank you dear, I'm glad that amused you. And son, I do hope me changing here was no trouble."
He spoke with a slight embarrassment to his voice, causing his son to shake his head. "It's fine dad. I didn't want Luna or Wisp tripping over your cloak again. You know how hyper they can be."
Hearing this, Luna spoke up with with a pout. "Diddy the hug, I've never tripped over granddiddy's cloak!" with a small sigh, he countered.
"Luna, you've almost tripped over it at least. Six or seven times, I'd rather not make it eight."
Her grandfather turned his head slightly to regard her, she looked up to him. Still pouting, "Its fine Luna, I only wore it to keep myself dry. Which reminds me."
He switched his attention to his son, "I noticed my dear daughter in law used her magic on the footpath, but not your gate. Son I understand its the festival seaso-"
Luna suddenly cut in, "Nino granddiddy. I did that, mommy showed me how to it!" looking back to her, he saw her head raised with a prideful look.
"Is that so? Well, I understand then. Given your height, I can't expect you to handle the gate." with those words, he gave his granddaughter a soft pat.
"Dad, why don't you sit down and I'll fetch you some coffee, I'm more than happy to talk. However a man of your age shouldn't spend too much time standing around."
The old man rubbed the back of his neck, "You've got a point my son, it was quite a rough walk." then he felt something against his palm.
Looking downward, he saw Luna grabbing hold of his right hand. "I'll walk with you to the table, granddiddy!" she pulled him along, her two hands wrapped tightly around his right hand. With a smile on her face, Luna helped her grandfather to a seat at the table that acted as their dinner, lunch and breakfast table.
It was a medium sized rectangle made from a nice study oak wood, with four metal legs painted a dark brown. Six chairs were placed around it, two on the left side and right side. With two more at its top and bottom.
"Thank you dear, I appreciate you helping me to my seat." his tone sounding genuinely grateful.
"You are welcome granddiddy. Diddy always says that we gotta be nice to guests, especially family." Luna climbed up the chair leg, sitting down to his left.
"Your father is right about that, we Everblooms are many things. But we are never bad hosts, or in the case of you and your sister, hostesses." the old man spoke in a stern tone on the topic.
His son adding to the conversation from across the kitchen, "I swear, growing up I can't remember a single gathering we hosted you didn't treat like the biggest event of the year."
In reply, his father laughed a small laugh.
"You aren't incorrect, but to be fair. Our family are guiding lights for the dead, we've played host to guests of great renown. Its practically in our blood to be the best hosts or hostesses around."
While his father spoke, the man poured two mugs of a light brown coffee. Adding two sugar cubes to his father's, before walking over to the table.
"I'm aware dad, I've talked to my wife about it quite a bit." while replying, he set one of the mugs down before his father. Taking a deep drink of his coffee, he asked. "Oh what have you talked about?" the man took a sip of his own drink before answering.
"Where to set up lights, if she should use her magic to add a bit of extra pop to the celebrations."
The old man looked at him, his expression of a mix of understanding with a slight smirk.
"I'm glad she understands how to add a bit of extra, well 'her energy' to the gatherings you host!"
His father seemed quite delighted.
He took a long sip, then continued. "Yes, however. It's quite a hassle for her to clean up." his expression had an air of worry or slight annoyance.
"But Diddy!" his daughter interjected, "Mommy always cleans it all up, and you both always look really happy when your friends visit." her father sighed softly.
Luna looked at him with a puzzled gaze, the man then reached down poking the tip of her nose. "To explain it in a way that you can grasp little moon. I'm always happy to see our friends or family, but you know."
The man took a deep breath before continuing.
"Your mom's magic, much like your own. Can be very draining on her, so even with my help, it can be quite a hassle for her." his voice still monotone, yet his face looked thoughtful. Even a bit warm.
Noticing his son's change in demeanor, the old man spoke up, "Did you see that Luna? Your Diddy has never been the best at expressing himself, but when it comes to your mother, his true self really shows."
She nodded as he spoke, giving him her full attention. Her eyes fixed on him while he spoke.
"Yeso granddiddy, I know. In school, they taught us that everyone has their own way of expressing themselves. Mommy and me use our talent!" Luna used her magic to create small orbs of light.
One of the orbs floated over to her father, in response, he gently took hold of it. Rolling it along his forearm to his knuckle and back.
"I see your mother has been doing a good job of teaching you how to use your magic."
Luna smiled, "Yeso. I've been doing my best to get better at casting spells. Diddy haven't you been helping Wisp with her uh, what the hug was it?"
Her grandfather seemed to snap to attention at the mention of his other grand daughter, "Speaking of Wisp, where is she? Normally shes greeted me by now, is she helping set up more decorations?"
His son shrugged in reply, "I believe she was helping decorate, but don't worry. She's alot like her mother. Popping up suddenly, with little warning."
The old man laughed softly, "Ah I see. That isn't too surprising, your sister has a habit of sudden appearances too, perhaps she learned it from both of them."
With the mention of his daughter, he felt a weight against his back. Along with a lighter weight on his right shoulder, out of curiosity.
He slowly turned to look, finding his view filled by a familiar sight. Bright white hair, paired with bright silver eyes. Resting partly on his shoulder, partly against his back. Was his second grand daughter, Wisp.
"Hi granddaddy." she softly said, mere inches away from his face. "Hello Wisp, how did you get to my shoulder without my notice?" he asked, a glimpse of curiosity in his eyes. In response, she floated from his back.
Slowly moving around him, before sitting at the table on his right side. She wore a light gray dress, with pink frills along the skirt and end of her sleeves.
Their father spoke, "See what I was saying? She's been practicing to float, turn invisible, even walk through hard surfaces."
"You are both growing so much, first I learn Luna has learned to keep ice and snow at bay. Now I find Wisp has grown more in tune with our gifts."
He wore a smile, yet his eyes turned a deep claret. Taking notice, Wisp reached out to her grandfather. Placing her open palms against his chest, she then pulled her arms back and forth. Patting his chest.
"Wisp, what are you doing?" the old man asked, his eyes returning to their more burgundy hue. "I'm patting you granddaddy, cause you always pat us when we look sad."
Their father spoke, "I'm sure your granddad appreciates the thought Wisp."
At his son's words, the old man cracked a more noticeable smile while visable perking up. "Why of course I appreciate it; say have I ever told you girls about when your father first discovered his powers?"
The pair jumped up from their seats In excitement, Luna quickly summoned a gust of wind to help regain her balance while Wisp channeled her power to float.
"Girls I understand your interest, as well as your excitement. But try not to go breaking the kitchen chairs. I just finished setting them up a few days ago."
Luna spoke first, "Sorry Diddy." followed by Wisp, "Yesoast, sorry daddy." their father sighed, "I'm just reminding you to be careful, why don't I get you both some hot chocolate? what about you dad? Want a refill on your coffee or would you prefer hot chocolate too?"
His father lifted his embty mug.
"I'll take either one, I know you've quite a skill with cooking or brewing."
When he turned to the dark orange wooden counter top, there sat a strange sight waiting for his attention.
"Hey honey!" his wife had used her magic to slip by, wanting to give her love a surprise.
She smiled at her husband, and handed him two dark blue plastic bags. "Heres the hot chocolate, I grabbed it from the pantry for you." before he could react, she jumped on to him. Wrapping her arms and legs around his torso.
Her head coming to rest on his shoulder, from the table, his father shouted in surprise.
"Daughter in law!" quickly she hopped from her husband, then rolled along his side. Standing with her back to her husband, she replied. "Father in law!"
The two locked eyes, her father in law raising from his seat. He then took a few steps forward, in response. She strided to meet him, they stood left of the table.
"Its so good to see you. How have you been?" the young energetic woman asked.
With a smile, the old man replied. "I've been wonderful, where have you been all day? I wanted to talk to you about the backyard gate and your solstice lights."
The young woman nodded along, "A few things! First, I was upstairs setting up more decorations, second yeah. I heard you talking about the gate, I'll handle it. The lights, think I just forgot to plug em in!"
Her father in law shook his head approvingly, "Thank you my dear daughter in law. I'll help if you need it, I just wanted to bring these issues to your attention. I'm aware you normally take care of decorating and such."
She smiled warmly in reply.
"try to! By the way, where's the girls grandma? Too cold out for her?" their grand father nodded slightly.
"Yes, I'm afraid the icy air made her a bit uncomfortable with coming with. So shes at the house, working on their solstice gifts."
Their mother turned to regard her daughters, playfully jumping in surprise when she noticed Wisp. Before leaning forward, pushing her daughters cheeks together.
"Well theres my Wispus! I wondered where you went, one second you're helping put up the moon and sun. Next time I turn my head, you've up and vanished!"
Wisp tried apologize, "I'm sor-" but before she could finish, her mother picked her up.
Then pulled her into a hug, while ruffling her hair. "I'm not upset with you Wispus, I was just messing with you a little. Sun and stars, you really are your fathers daughter."
Luna reached out, poking her mom's side to get her attention. Still holding Wisp, she turned to regard her other daughter with a confused expression. "What is it Luna? Did you want some too?" she reached out to her other daughter, poking her gently.
In reply, Luna shook her head. "Nino, how is Wisp Diddy's daughter? Aren't we both his daughters?" her tone carried a slight hint of concern. Their mother set down her younger sister, then leaned over to Luna.
"Its a joke, hun. Because Wisp has a bit more of your father's serious view. And isn't very good at noticing obvious jokes. Seems like it's starting to rub off on you as well!"
Their father cut in, "Yes, yes. I've always been bad at noticing your jokes, but."
Suddenly, he wrapped his arms around her. Then, he leaned close to her cheek. Placing a gentle kiss against it.
"You've always been very bad at noticing my approach."
She blushed deeply, her husband's chest pressed against her back; his arms clinging against her.
His wife replied in a more shy tone then her normal speaking voice, "You've got me there, and here." as she said here, he felt his forearm pressed against her chest.
Their daughters both ran over, giving their mom a hug around her lower legs.
Both of them too short to reach much higher, their grandpa laughed softly. "I see you two are still just as in love as you were when you were teens."
His words caught Wisp attention, "Teens, granddaddy?" the old man replied with a gaze of nostalgia. Recalling days long passed.
"Thats right dear, when your father was around. Oh I'd say his mid teens, he was chased day in and day out by your mother. She wouldn't stop until he went on a date with her, I remember when he'd come home. His eyes filled with a mix of anger and happiness." at his father's words, the son blushed.
"Hey, the girls probably don't wanna hear about how their mother and I got together." Luna spoke up, "Nino I wanna know granddiddy!"
With a tense expression, their father patted his daughter. "Little moon tell you what, I'll tell you both that story some other time. As for now, I'll make that hot chocolate I mentioned." hearing hot chocolate, made Luna forget about the story.
"Yeso! Hot chocolate time!" she said while hopping with excitement. Wisp joined her sister, the two stood side by side hopping in sync. Repeating, "Hot chocolate time!"
Their father turned his head to his father, "See what I said about them being hyper?" the old man giggled.
"I believe I see what you mean." their mother crouched down to them, "Girls why don't we play a game of punch or pat while your dad works on making your hot chocolate?" their hopping stopped suddenly.
Both of their expressions took on a more serious quality, while from the table their grandad leaned over to his daughter in law.
"Dear, what is pat or punch? And why did they become so serious?" she turned to him slowly, with a rather odd expression on her face. "You're about to see. Luna you go first, then Wisp. Sound good?"
"Yesoast mommy." said Wisp, while Luna gave a small nod with a smile.
Their mother stood back up, then lowered herself slightly into something akin to a boxing stance. But instead of making fists, her hands were angled forward open wide.
Luna in response, dropped into a peak-aboo stance. Her little hands balled tightly into fists, that rested against her cheeks beneath her eyes.
Wisp and their grandfather looked on, one with a curious yet confused gaze. The other, a look of pure curiosity. One step, then another. Before Luna stopped in place, and began to make an infinity symbol with her upper torso.
Her legs moving in short steps forward, her mother watching with an eager eye.
Their mom laughed softly, turning her attention to Wisp with a playful smirk. "It's your turn Wisp, or do you not wanna play?" the girl shook her head, and stepped back a few feet. Luna did as well, not wanting to get hit by accident.
Once more, their grandfather watched. A bit more curious, given Wisp lacked Lunas magic.
She looked at her mother with a smile, her bright silver eyes bursting with joy. "I've been practicing this mommy!" she said, their mother's attitude seemed to change.
"Oh is that right? Not gonna be patted this time, Wispus?" her tone of voice sounded more, menacing.
It carried the impression of a villain, mocking the hero or something similar.
The tap of her foot steps against the tile floor faintly echoed, as she started to bounce on her toes. Unlike her sister, Wisp moved quickly. Darting around her mother, when the tapping sounds stopped.
Wisp was stanced in a more aggressive way than her older sister, her left arm hung low. Moving back and forth, in the motion of a scythe cutting through grain.
For a second, their grandfather wore a look of surprise. "Where did you learn that?" he softly said to himself. Once again, their mother pounced.
Expecting her arm to reach before Wisp could, instead. She felt something strike against her side softly, then her stomach, taking notice. Their mother tried to stop, but it was too late. Using an ability she only recently learned, her daughter had extended her reach!
Allowing the flicker jabs she had learned from her father to land, and stun their mom.
Suddenly, Wisp appeared in front of her. And brought her knuckle down, with a soft thud. She had given her mother a pat instead.
"Yay!" she bellowed, gently floating back to the floor. Their mom fell over, "Oh no, I've been bested!" she cried out. Luna ran over, and hugged her sister.
"Good job Wisp, you won. Diddy, granddidddy!" they both turned to regard her, "We saw dear, and son. Was she doing what I think she was?" slowly their father turned back to the stove, humming a song.
Luna's ears had perked up, curiously she looked up at her grandfather. "What is it granddiddy?" their grandad looked to his son, "Son. You don't care if I tell Luna this story at least, do you?"
The man peaked over his shoulder, his head low. He seemed, nervous or unsure. "Against my better judgment, I'll say sure on this. Just, don't sound be too over dramatic. No offense dad, but you get very theatric."
Their grandfather called both Luna and Wisp to the table, the pair bolted over. Almost knocking each other over as they did, their mother joined them.
Curious as well to what all the fuss was about. "Wisp, that movement you did. Are you aware of its name?"
She shook her head no, in reply. He gave a small nod.
"I'm not too surprised, your father learned that movement in from his grandfather, your great granddiddy as Luna would put it."
They all leaned in, their ears perked up and their eyes wide with wonder. "Your father, and my father, as you could guess aren't exactly violent men."
The man listened from the stove, his expression carrying a deep nervousness, that none saw.
"Well as you can imagine, some times even a peaceful man must stand up for himself. My father knew as much, using his skills with a scythe. He developed a modified version of a boxers stance."
Wisp spoke up, lifting her hand to get his attention. "Yes my dear granddaughter?" his eyes were fixed on her.
"Is that why daddy said to imagine I'm moving a scythe through grass when he was teaching me?"
Their grandad laughed softly, "He explained it the exact same way huh. That's why we call it the reaper stance."
All of them let out a, "Wow!" at once. His wife turned to see his back, still turned to them while he made their hot chocolate.
"I should mention, the name was your grandfather's name for his version of it, he would move his arm as if he was cutting through wheat with his scythe. One day, your father saw him practicing it. I remember he begged to be taught how to move like that."
Suddenly, their father spoke. "It looked pretty cool. And more then that, I wanted to make sure I could defend Violet from bullies." his voice sounded rather flustered or embarrassed, in reply his father simply nodded.
"Thats exactly what you said then too. You see, Violet isn't exactly like most people. And because of that, she was the target for alot of rudeness. As for your father, the kinda big brother he is-"
Their mother interrupted, "Yeah we already know, he can be a bit over protective."
Before he could continue, their father placed four cups on the table in front of them. Three filled with hot chocolate, and one a blue berry smoothie.
"Hot chocolate for dad, Luna and Wisp. As for you my love, a nice blue berry smoothie." she leaned over, and kissed her husband on the lips with a smile. After which, her husband took a seat next to her.
"Thank you for the hot chocolate, now where was I?" their grandfather took a moment.
"Yes, he's still much the same!" as those words slipped past his lips, there came a sound. Like rushing water.
It came from a strange pitch black vortex that appeared next to the wall by the fridge.
The suddenness caused everyone to go silent.
Together, they all sat. Watching, and waiting. It spun for a few seconds; when it started to slow down. They could make out a small humanoid shape, that fell from the vortex, it landed with a soft thud.
Slowly, the figure rose to a standing position. It's body and head were covered by a small hooded cloak, beneath the hood was a face of bright purple light.
With eyes and a mouth more similar to a Jack-o lantern, instead of a human face.
"Hey big brother." said Violet, after she balanced herself. Luna and Wisp jumped from their seats, practically tackling their aunt to the ground in a duo hug. "Aunt Violet! We were just talking about yo butt!" for a few seconds, she had to steady herself. Before responding.
"Good to see you two, too. And why were you guys talking about me?"
"Hello Violet." their grandfather said warmly, getting his daughters attention. "Oh hey dad, I didn't expect to see you here." he opened his arms wide, "What, no hug for your old man?"
She walked over, grumpily grunting as she did. Violet stood closer in height to her neices, then her father or brother. Even her sister in law stood at least two feet taller.
With a small hop, she flew straight up. Into her father's waiting embrace. "It's good to see you."
Her voice carried a certain grumpyness about it, "It's good to see you too, dad. And would you please tell mom she can just call me?"
The old man smiled at his daughter, "You know how she is, a phone call just isn't the same." Violet sighed. "Yeah I know that dad. Sorry I couldn't find a place close by, and before you say I should visit more-"
Her sister in law cut in, "Hey sis, not trying to step on your toes. But your dad was in the middle of a story about you and your big brother."
Violet turned to regard her older brother with confused expression, "Wait. Is this the story of when he beat up those bullies when we were still in elementary?" a heavy sigh slipped out of his mouth.
"Yes, that's exactly the story. I'm a bit embarrassed how often dad brings it up." the old man looked a bit apologetic. "Son, I apologize if I've made you uncomfortable."
His son sighed deeply. "Its okay Dad, I know how you are. You've always loved sharing old stories, about me, Violet. Even your own father."
The old fellow nervously rubbed his neck.
"Ah, that I have! Haha, your mother always says I should write them down." Violet spoke up, "Yeah, sorry to interrupt you dad. I didn't know."
"Thank you dear, and it's fine. But, to get to the point and hopefully avoid any more discomfort. He gave the bullies harassing your aunt a proper beating."
The girls looked at their dad, wide eyed and amazed. Their shared gaze then turned to their aunt.
Who looked back at them, with uneasy eyes.
"Hug are you staring at me fo'?" quickly, they approached her, causing their aunt to back away a few inches.
Luna spoke first, "Aunt Violet did diddy always beat up yo bullies?"
Following after, almost instantly was Wisp, "Did daddy always know how to cook, and did you wear a cloak like grand daddy then too?"
Carefully, she pushed away her neices, trying her best to avoid having to actually answer.
But unfortunately for Violet, much like their father, the girls were stubborn. They repeated their questions for around a minute, until she finally answered.
"Okay! Yes he was pretty strong for his age."
With her question answered, Luna returned to her seat at the table. Meanwhile, Wisp still stood.
"Yo daddy learned how to cook from yo grandma; your granddad bought me hoodies, and other coats. But I started to wear cloaks like him when I was a teen. Wait why do you care about that?"
Wisp replied plainly, "Cause I never really thought about it until now aunt Violet!"
Happy with the answers, she went back to her seat.
Slowly, Violet turned to look at her brother. "Big brother, why the hug are yo kids so weird?" he shrugged.
"You are one to talk about being weird sis." she gribbled to herself, "Hug you, even if you are right."
For a few minutes, they sat around enjoying their various drinks. Since she showed up so suddenly, Violet was sharing a few sips with their father.
"How do you make this hot chocolate? every time I make some at home it's never this good." she asked with a raised eye brow over her bright glowing purple eye.
Her older brother leaned back in his seat, shrugging. Much to his sisters annoyance. "Don't you dare."
Curiously, his daughters turned to look at him and her, their aunt had a bothered grimace.
While their father looked indifferent.
"What is it aunt Violet?" asked both Luna and Wisp, equally curious as to why she looked so upset.
She didn't speak a word, instead focusing her energy to stare at her older brother.
Because of her silence, their mother answered their question. "Well girls, your aunt has been trying to get your father's hot chocolate recipe for around, quite a bit of time now! Before you two were even born I think."
They looked at him once more, amazed at his ability to keep a secret for so long.
"Yeah, and every time I ask, he says -" the man spoke, interrupting. "Its special because I only know the recipe, that's why it's my special hot chocolate." his voice was calm, lacking any malice or ill will.
Yet it still bothered his sister.
Their grandfather laughed, "Even now huh? I swear, you're more stubborn than a rocksnake." the man shrugged.
Wisp leaned over to her aunt, and whispered in her ear. "Have you tried saying please?" for a moment, Violet's expression turned a deeper shade of purple, compared to its usual violet.
She cleared her throat, and spoke in a tender almost alien tone. "Big brother will you please tell me your hot chocolate recipe?"
His face shafted to a look of surprise, like that of a man who watched the fish he just caught fly up from the bucket and do a triple cartwheel before landing in the sea.
"After all these years, you finally figured out how to say please. That's all I wanted to hear, sis. Alright, come over by the stove top. Grab a chair, or stool. I can't hold you up. And make this."
She hopped from their father's lap, gribbling to herself all the while. "Stupid big brother, hold me up, he knows fully well I can float."
Her neices, father and sister in law watched Violet waddle over to the stove. Because of her height and build, her walk bore a rather penguin like quality to it.
"Sis you shouldn't float around we do this, you know how tired you get." he said while grabbing the ingredients from his cabinet.
"Big brother hug you, yo butt may be right. But there's no way this will take that long." as he turned to her, his arms were filled with bags and glass jars. His face an expression of indifference.
"Fine, you're free to do as you please. Just try to save a bit of your energy, I don't need you suddenly hitting the floor like a fallen brick."
Violet let out a sigh, and summoned a murky dark tentacle from the ground under her. In a small puddle of darkness, it moved over to the table. Slowly wrapping around a chair, before dragging it over to her.
She then used the limb as a form of stepping stone, to easily climb atop the seat.
Allowing her to stand almost head height with her brother, unfortunately. Still stood a few inches too short. The man laid the various ingredients on his counter top.
"For starters, let's pick the kind of coco powder. Knowing you, I think a darker chocolate would be fitting."
Instead of speaking, she replied with small nods. Much to his surprise.
"Next, let's decide on the add ins. I like to use a pinch of cinnamon, but do you want any cinnamon sis?" for a moment, she thought it over.
And gave a thumb ups at the idea, "Okay good, I appreciate you're listening to me. I can only imagine your excitement, now for the next ingredient. I've got two kinds of vanilla here, one is extract and the other paste."
He carefully held up a medium size glass bottle, and a larger looking round jar. "I tend to use the extract, since it's more mild and doesn't over power lighter coco powder."
For a few seconds, Violet weighted the options in her mind, trying to decide which she'd prefer.
"There's no hurry sis, if you wanna think it over don't worry about it."
"I think paste, cuz you said it doesn't over power lighter coco. But we're using dark coco, aren't we?" her older brother smiled slightly, happy to know she's been paying close attention.
"That's right sis, I think paste would be a bit of a better fit for this. Now, we've got our choice of sweeteners. I have brown sugar, regular sugar and molasses." two of them were in plain plastic bags, while the last much like the paste. Was housed in a glass jar.
Their family watched from the kitchen table, happy to see the pair getting along. "I'll take the molasses, I remember dad used to pour a little bit on top of my mashed potatoes."
Violet spoke with a nostalgic tenderness in her voice.
"That I did. I always liked mine with a tea spoon, but you my dear daughter. It was always two tea spoons."
The man walked away, placing the unused ingredients back into his cabinet.
While doing that, he fetched two different gallons of milk from the fridge. Setting them gently on the counter top next to the ingredients his sister had picked.
"Whole milk, or two percent?" with a hint of annoyance in her tone, she replied. "Does it really matter?"
Her older brother shook his head, and replied with confidence. "Of course. Every ingredient, even the kind of salt you use can change the flavor profile. I want this to be something special for you Violet."
Looking at him, she felt a strange sincerity in his expression that she couldn't explain.
"Okay, whatever. I think whole milk would be better, and wait did you say salt?"
"Yes I did." he turned away, putting back the milk and fetching two different little dishes of salt.
His little sister stared at him, a puzzled expression on her face.
"Big brother what the actual hug is this?" he laughed softly in response. "I told you, even the salt you pick can change the flavor profile."
One dish had large flakes of salt, closer to sea salt. While the other housed small grains, she looked them over. Unsure what the real difference would be.
"I don't know big brother, which would you recommend?" his eyes carried a thoughtfulness, as he answered.
"Personally, I think sea salt would be a bit better. The more pronounced flavor could help cut through the bitterness of the dark chocolate, and the intense sweetness of the molasses."
With a small nod, Violet replied. Carefully, he handed her the dish of flakey salt. "Now, one more question. Did you wanna use some of my coffee powder too?"
Her face twisted to a look between disgust, and curiosity. Which caused her brother to snicker.
"Big brother the hug kinda question is that? Are you messing with me right now?"
Gently, he placed his hand on her shoulder then knelt down slightly to meet her eyes.
"No Violet, I'm being totally serious. I know it sounds strange, but it's quite good. If you end up not liking the hot chocolate specifically because of the powdered coffee, I'll make you another cup. I promise."
For a moment, she thought about it.
"Fine, but only because I know you'd never go back on a promise." while her older brother was looking through the different blends of coffee in his cabinet.
Violet turned to see what the rest of their family was up to, she saw them still sat. And heard them chatting.
Noticing her eyes on them, Luna beakoned her closer. Once again, Violet summoned her tentacle, this time riding it the short distance to the kitchen table.
"Hug you want Luna?" she said with an impatient tone of voice. "Did I tell yo butt about what happened at school, Aunt Violet?"
She raised her hands to the sides of her head, giving them a gentle rub. "No Luna, you didn't. Can it wait until after I've gotten my hot chocolate?" her neice gave a small smile and nod in response.
Then she leaped forward a few inches, embracing her aunt in a hug. With a low gribble of irritation, she patted her neices back.
From behind her, came her brothers voice. "Sorry I took so long sis, I wanted to get a blend that'd compliment the flavors you picked out. Hope you still like the taste of dusk pedal."
Luna noticed her aunts expression quite literally light up at the mention of dusk pedal, the normally dim glow of her eyes and mouth became like a solstice light blub.
Seeing the light illuminating his daughters cheek, the man spoke.
"I'll take that as a yes you do. Whenever you're finished with that hug, I'll be right here waiting by the stove for you. No rush though."
Luna let go, allowing her aunt to surf back to the stove. Violets older brother gave her a look brimming with a unique warmth.
"We're almost finished sis, and as I'm sure you've probably noticed. This isn't really a recipe yet."
He looked away, his attention turned to the various ingredients laid on the countertop. His sister turned her head to regard them as well.
"Yeah hey wait a minute, big brother what exactly have you been doing this whole time?"
The man turned his head a few inches, almost looking over his shoulder. "Well sis, I don't actually have a 'recipe', I hope you aren't upset about that."
Unsure how to respond, she just stared at him. She felt angry, yet also content. "That's so you, it hurts. You know that big brother?"
He simply shrugged in response, "Instead of pointing out the obvious, why don't you help me finish this up?"
"Okay just show me what I gotta do." the man placed a medium sized sauce pan on the stove top.
Then snapped his fingers, summoning a small blue flame on the tip of his index finger.
Carefully, he lowered his lit finger and twisted a small switch on the machine. In an instant, there was a pillar of blue fire. Before it shrunk to a much more modest flame.
"Now, we add a cup of milk. Bring that to a boil, then we'll add two cups of coco powder and a pinch of the coffee."
Doing as he said, his sister followed his instructions to the best of her ability.
"Now, add the molasses. Followed by some salt."
She poured in around two tea spoons of molasses, then a small pinch of salt. "Don't forget a bit of the vanilla, and a dash of cinnamon."
Once more, she followed his instructions to the letter.
"Now, I'll finish up. Why don't you go take a seat for now?" his arm was raised, pointing to the table as spoke of having a seat.
"Alright. Thank you big brother." the man turned his attention to the pot, and replied with a side eye glance.
"You are welcome sis."
Violet climbed down the chair, then carefully walked it back to the kitchen table. Joining her family mid conversation.
Her sister in law reached over, embracing her.
"Hey sis! I haven't really had a chance to talk with you since you showed up. How are you hun?"
A bit taken aback by the characteristic sudden of her sister in laws hug and questioning, she took a moment.
Straighted up her cloak, then answered.
"I'm fine, I appreciate you asking at least. Been busy helping get the flower shop ready for spring, while trying to keep Shuck from making a mess whenever I'm not home."
Wisp's ears perked up.
"Aunt Violet, who's Shuck?" before she could answer, her father cut in. "The puppy I got her two solstices ago as a gift. Have you girls not met her yet?"
Luna and Wisp said no, in their own ways.
Their grand father turned a confused gaze to his daughter, she responded in kind with one of her own.
"What? I haven't had a chance to bring her by, especially since she got so big recently!"
She fiddled around in her cloak for a moment, then pulled out her wallet. "See?" on the inner left sleeve was a photo of Violet stood next to the a massive black hound with bright red eyes.
"My goodness, she really has gotten big." her father commented. Luna and Wisp leaned a bit closer, Wisp specifically was amazed at the dogs height.
From the photo, she guessed Shuck was at the very least two feet taller than her aunt.
Suddenly from behind her, Violet's older brother poked her back. Startling the young woman, her nieces and sister in law giggled at the sight of her almost jumping in surprise.
"Big brother I told you before about doing that!"
He didn't say anything in reply, instead handing her a small white mug with a soft smile.
"Here you go sis, I just finished it. I hope you like it."
Slowly, she brought the mug to her lips. Or rather, the glowing hole that acted as a mouth.
The first sip carried a heavy bitterness, followed almost right away by an intense sweetness.
Her mind became filled with nostalgic thoughts of her youth, she gazed up to her older brother. Eyes wide.
"I'll take that as a yes." she nodded, still a bit overwhelmed by the emotions the drink brought forth.
He reached down, softly patting the top of her hood against her head.
Luna called to her aunt, "Aunt Violet can I tell you the story now?" Violet turned to her niece, "Yeah sure, just gimme a second to take my seat."
The man lifted his sister up to her seat.
"There you go sis." the man took a seat next to his wife once more, his father smiling wide at the sight of his family gathered together.
Luna stood up, asking everyone for their attention. In response, her grandfather spoke. "I do believe the floor is yours dear." everyone nodded.
"Yay! So, Wisp won a popularity contest at school recently, cause her home room teacher who was mine last year did one!" as she said Wisp, she pointed to her.
Their father cut in, "Do you mean Mr.bitterbutter?"
His daughter warmly shook her head, "Yeso!"
Her grandfather spoke, "Not to interrupt, but are you on personal terms with the man, son?"
"Yes I am, he's a very nice man. We've had him over as a guest before, sometimes to discuss how classes have been, other times we just chat."
Luna seemed a bit annoyed, and angerly trashed her arms around. "Diddy, granddiddy I'm telling a story the hug!"
The old man bowed forward, "Ah yes, terribly sorry dear. Do go on." she embraced her granddad in a hug.
"Its okay granddiddy. Where was I? Oh! Wisp won cause he asked everyone who their favorite student was, and they voted Wisp cause. What the hug did they say?"
Their mother interjected this time, having read the paper he sent home with her younger daughter.
"Mysterious, Luna. They said she's very mysterious." Luna shook her head, "Yeso."
Wisp shyly turned invisible, and floated around her chairs back support.
"What are you doing?" asked their aunt.
Their mom answered, "Wisp is very shy whenever she gets attention like that, and as you could guess. Given her ability to float, along with everything else-"
Violet stopped her, "Yeah I get it. Look I was a bit different growing up too, so I know all about it."
Slowly, Wisp floated over to Violet. And stared at her with a look of curiosity. "Hug you want now Wispus?" she asked, a bit annoyed at her nieces gaze.
"How did you deal with it aunt Violet?" the young girl spoke in a shaky nervous tone.
That caused her aunt to feel a sense of pity. "Listen." she said, taking hold of her niece by the shoulders.
"You should really be asking your dad about this, given you two share this kinda stuff. But. Knowing him, his advice would probably make things worse."
Her older brother sat up at attention, "Hey."
Before he could continue, his wife grabbed his arm and leaned against him.
"No, no. She's got a point, love. You don't do very well with things like this." the man leaned back.
"Thank you. As I was saying, you gotta remember that no matter why or how people look at you."
She gently nodded, paying close attention.
"You are you, and that's good. Whenever people make you feel shy or nervous, take a deep breath and think of something that makes you happy."
Wisp embraced her tightly, "Yesoast."
Despite her discomfort, Violet did her best to return her affection with a series of soft pats on her neices back. Which did make her happy.
Their grandfather smiled at the sight, as did her mother and father. Luna however, felt sad. Believing herself at fault for upsetting Wisp.
Noticing the clear shift in her daughters expression, their mother reached over to her. And gave her a small pat.
"Luna don't you go getting all upset now, I know exactly what you're thinking. And no, it's not your fault."
She tried to counter, "But mommy-" her mother quickly shut that down.
"But nothing. You didn't know it'd make her upset, I know you just wanted to be a a supportive big sister." Luna gave a small nod with a frown, "Yeso."
Her father over hearing the conversation, interjected.
"Little moon, why don't you try asking Wisp what she thinks, instead of assuming?"
For a few seconds, Luna pondered.
While she was in the middle of thinking, Wisp had returned to her seat, looking much happier.
Taking notice of her sister lost in thought, she called out to her. "Luna hug is yo butt doing?"
The girl snapped to attention, "Wispus! I was thinking about what I should say to you. Cause I didn't mean to make you upset."
Wisp stared at her sister, clearly confused. "Luna hug are you talking about?" Luna huffed, "Wisp hug you mean what am I talking about?!" their father spoke up getting his daughters attention.
"Luna thought she upset you bringing up the popularity contest, because she didn't know how it made you feel. And Wisp didn't know you thought that."
They both went, "Ohhh." now that they understood, the pair climbed from their seats and met to hug.
Their aunt turned to her brother and his wife, but before she could speak. Her brother stopped her.
"They are still kids sis, they haven't quite figured out their communication skills yet."
Violet gave a shrug in reply. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever, and why did they have a popularity contest anyway?"
Her neice hearing her, let out a surprised, "Oh!" before climbing back up her to hear seat.
Wisp then started to explained "Cause our teacher wanted to teach us the difference between being liked and being popular."
Everyone nodded along as she explained, all a bit interested where this lesson was going. "He said you can have a small group of friends, and seem less popular but still be happy."
Her grandfather cut in, "Very true."
His words caused Wisp lift her arms for a moment in joy, before she continued.
"Yesosat, but you can have a lot of friends and be happy too. It just depends, while some people are known by everyone. But they don't really have any friends."
Her father nodded, "Thats equally true." Wisp nodded, finishing by saying.
"He said that it's most important that our friends no matter how many we have, like us for who we are." this time, her mother interjected.
"I must say I agree with that!" Wisp smiled, happy to share what she learned with her family. Violet spoke last, "Wasn't expecting a whole lesson."
Her father gave her a soft pat, "Come now dear, I think it was nice of Wisp to share what she learned with us. In fact, it reminds me of you at that age."
Violet huffed, and turned away with a pout. "I dunno what you're on about dad."
Luna giggled, not quite used to seeing her aunt flustered. As did her mother, Wisp on the other hand asked her grandfather. "What did Aunt Violet share?"
The old man cleared his throat, then answered with a warm look. "When she was around your age, she learned about flowers. All kinds of shades, and species."
Wisp looked at her aunt a bit surprised, "Is that why you work in a flower shop aunt Violet?" she asked with an inquiring tone of voice.
"Yeah, why do you ask?" the shadow creature replied in her usual grumpy tone of voice. "Cause I think it's nice you still like flowers, you don't really seem to be fond of most stuff or people."
As one would expect, the young girl spoke with the bluntness of a hammer striking stone. Violet lowered her head, while rubbing her forehead.
"You aren't very good at sugar coating things, you know that Wispus? I swear. It'd do you some good to learn how to not be too honest."
The girls father spoke up in response to his sisters comment about being honest. "To be fair Violet, you've never had much talent for sugar coating either. Remember when you spilled ink on my favorite sneakers?"
She nervously looked around, and tugged at her hoods edges, avoiding her brothers eyes.
"I see you do. I'll never forget, you tried washing them off in the bathtub with shampoo and a bar of soap."
Their father laughed softly, "I recall that as well, and you asked what happened." both men spoke in unison.
"She blamed the cat!"
Violet replied, "Hug you, at least I tried to clean them up." her brother reached over, softly patting her with a warm smile. "I'm aware sis. I was using that as an example."
She grumpily huffed, and crossed her arms.
"Yeah whatever." their father wanting to lighten his daughters mood, begin to tell an old story of her youth.
"You know Violet, I wonder if your love of flowers is related to how I found you as a babe." her eyes lit up and she turned to regard him.
As did the rest of their family, all a bit curious. Especially his grand daughters, Luna and Wisp.
"This was long ago, and I was coming home from work. In the stillness of the night, I swear I could hear the cries of a babe. Out of concern, I searched for it's source."
His eyes took on a scarlet glow, closer to the hue of his younger years.
"Behind a bush, laying atop a bed of dark purple Duskwillows. Wrapped in a pitch black shawl, was a strange babe. Crying her little heart out." Violet shyly tucked her head beneath her hood.
And her father held her close, as he continued.
"I could tell, she was alone and afraid. So I gently lifted her into my arms, and spoke to her."
The old man cleared his throat, trying to match his exact voice and words.
"My, my. Who would leave such a poor child out here all alone?" her eyes gleamed, as she looked at the face of a soul guide.
Her crying stopped, as she felt safe and warm in his embrace. The man spoke tenderly, pulling back the shawl slightly to better look at her.
"Hello little one, how would you like to be an Everbloom? Would you like that?" as he said this, the man playfully poked at her face.
She giggled, and took hold of his finger with a smile.
"Delightful, you'll have an older brother. A mother, and I'll be your father. I do hope this is okay dear."
In his embrace the small bundle of shadow shook, and moved. Cheerful at the things he described.
"I'll take that as a yes. I'm sure your big brother and you will be the best of friends. And I'm sure you'll both make me very proud. Wouldn't you agree Violet?"
The babe laughed at the mention of her name for the first time, her face lighting up bright like a shooting star.
He walked home, along the old well worn foot path, holding his daughter close to his chest.
When he reached home, his wife greeted him with a shocked expression. After explaining, the woman wasn't sure what to do or say.
But when she held the babe, and met her eyes. She couldn't in good conscience turn away the lost child.
Later that day, they showed their young son his new baby sister.
The boy gently held his sister, and vowed he'd hurt anyone who made his sis cry.
Finishing his story, the old man exhaled deeply. Finding it rather exhausting to speak with a voice like the one he had all those years ago.
"And that was the day we welcomed Violet into our family; to me. It was the day our family became complete."
He looked around at everyone, his son and wife smiled, while his grand daughters looked puzzled.
Before suddenly, "Granddiddy could you please excuse us?" said Luna. Unsure what was the matter, he shrugged.
"Of course dear, thank you for asking though."
Suddenly she and her sister ran from the kitchen, down the hall.
For a few seconds, everyone but Violet looked at each other. Bewildered by their sudden and hastey departure. Meanwhile, Luna and Wisp huddled close in their bedroom, speaking in hushed tones.
"Wisp do you know what this means?" without words she replied. "Then you know what our butts gotta do."
Her older sister spoke in a serious tone, before they headed back out to the kitchen.
In their absence, the conversation shifted to explaining how the shoes was an example of Violet lacking an ability to sugar coat.
The two approached their aunt, much to her characteristic annoyance. "The hug you two want no-" they tightly embraced her. On both sides of her, held her neices.
"No matter what yo still our aunt, aunt Violet." they said in unison.
Confusing her even further, she looked at father and brother, even her sister in law.
Who all wore such odd smiles, that brimmed with a quality of sincerity. Seeing this, made her understand.
Doing her best to return their embrace with one of her own, she replied.
"And you two are still my neices, even if you are a couple of weirdos. Yo my couple of weirdos." her voice carried more affection than usual, granted.
Even trying to sound affection, she sounded rather bothered. But it was better than nothing.
Their grandfather smiled a wide toothy grin, and spoke softly at the sight.
"How very beautiful, few things warm my heart more than seeing my family so happily together." his son smiled as well, and begin to speak.
"I wanted to say this sooner, but the girls left before I got an opportunity to. Much like Violet joining our family made it complete, I've always believed that the day Wisp came into the world. My own family really became complete."
As he said complete, his eyes turned to look at his daughters, more specifically Luna.
"What do you think little moon?" without a hint of thought or hesitation, Luna swiftly answered. "Yeso Diddy!"
The man laughed a little at his daughters straight forward reply. "You really do not mice words, do you?"
Their mother joined the conversation, "She wouldn't be your daughter if she did, hun."
Violet hugged her brothers side, much to his surprise. Then she reached over, and hugged her sister in law. Both were a bit taken aback.
"What?!"
She shouted, annoyed by their shocked faces.
"Just can't say I'm used to getting a hug from you sis, seems a bit out of character."
Violet huffed, and stomped her little feet. "Well excuse me for trying to show affection! Even when I'm nice yo butt still finds a way to give me sass."
Her neices and father giggled together, seeing her stomp about all annoyed was quite a funny sight given her small pear shaped body.
"Alright, alright. To simmer things down, why don't I tell the story of why we celebrate Solstice?" Violet shrugged, "That sounds fine." once more, she took a seat at the table.
"Long ago, in a time before the world."
The tale begin in the age of the unknown, a time fit only for myth and legends.
"There was nothing, no earth, no sun and no moon. Then from the dark blue came forth a lone entity, born of the nothing. It was the first, or nameless one."
He continued.
"Using their unknowable powers, they brought into existence the sun and moon. Fully formed. Now the sun, he shined bright and brilliant. While the moon, she perfectly reflected his glow with ease."
His family nodded along, invested in the tale.
"Many years passed, and they had become close. Until in their shared romance, they had created the first of the constellations." as he described this, he made the symbol of it with his hands.
"It was the dragon, mighty and strong. The first of the thirteen constellations."
For a second he paused caching his breath.
"Then came his brother, the panther. After him, their first sister. The Orca."
With each of them he mentioned, he would mimic their symbol with his hands.
"Next came the feathered serpent, he was followed by their sister the sheep. They were the first few constellations."
Luna lifted her hand, getting his attention.
"Yes Luna?" he softly said.
"Granddiddy I thought this was about solstice, why are you explaining the thirteen constellations?" with a smile, he leaned to her. Soft patting her head.
Then explaining, "They are important, because they are part of the reason for the season dear."
His grand daughter nodded in response, believing she understood him.
"Now, as I was saying. They were the first set, but not the last. Some time later, came the bird. After him, was the boar. Followed shortly by the spider."
This time, Wisp raised her hand.
"What is it Wispus?" she spoke softly. "Who's your favorite constellation granddaddy?" he paused in thought for a moment, before replying. "I'll tell you once I'm done."
For a moment, he stopped to stretch.
Then begin again.
"After them, their parents had more children. This time, it was the bear, wolf and shark." his grand daughters looked amazed.
"Finally, their last two children were the rabbit and the first of man."
Luna and Wisp nodded deeply, while their grandfather sat forward and placed his arms on the table.
"Besides the constellations, they created the world, and with it. The first of man came to stay."
His son held his wife close.
"Soon they would all live on the earth, creating much of the world as we know it. Until one by one."
He slowly closed his hand, until it was shut tight.
"They had all returned to the divine realm, but this time. The thirteen of them were spread across the vast sky."
Violet lifted her hood, to better see him.
"Because of this, every solstice, they gather together once again. With their father sun and mother moon. Celebrating the one day they can do."
For a few moments, the old man's eyes took on a mix of light and dark.
"And that is why we celebrate solstice. It is a time of family, togetherness and most importantly. Love." looking around the table.
He was met by the sight of his family looking back at him warmly, but amoug them. His two granddaughters had fallen asleep. Slowly, his son and his wife lifted them into their arms and carried them to bed.
"Violet, would you like to walk home with me? I'm sure your mother would be very happy to see her only daughter this solstice."
Warmly, she responded with a smile. "Sure dad."
As the pair headed for the door, they heard a son and a brother call to them. "Be careful." walking out into the night, they were met by a beautiful starry sky.
