About This Newsletter

The contests and activities on this site are constantly changing! Almost every day there is something new and exciting to view and participate in. The ideas are endless. Some succeed, some manage to get along, while others, unfortunately, are left behind and forgotten. My goal as your Contest & Activity newsletter editor is to provide each of you with the tools it takes to create a great success.

Recipe: Writing Prompt Contests

Below is a "recipe" for making a writing prompt contest. Feel free to get creative with the recipe. Some of the best things come from expirementing with recipes. We wouldn't have chocolate chip cookies if someone hadn't decided to expirement with putting chocolate into sugar cookies, now would we?

Ingredients:
         1 Really Cool Prompt
5,000 GPs (or more if desired)
         1 Message Forum
         1 Week free for judging

Preparation Instructions:
The first thing to do is gather your ingredients. Make sure you have the right amount of GPs and time to be able to devote to the contest. Then, take your message forum and open it up. Clearly add/explain the following: creative attention grabber, rules of the contest, prompt, prizes, judges, deadlines, and judging deadline. Rules should include limitations in length, genre, rating, and item type for your contest. Prizes should include any first, second, third places and/or honorable mentions. For deadlines, refer to "cooking time" below.
Once the contest is craeted, it is up to you to advertise it. Post it in forums, with discretion and tact. Do not, under any circumstances, send mass emails to member of Writing.Com inviting them to look at your contest. Make use of the plug pages, conveniently located from the "Item Jumps" menu at the top left corner of every Writing.Com page. Make sure you check in on your contest frequently to see if anyone has posted questions, to make sure members are following the rules, etc. Pay close attention to reviews sent and take into consideration every suggestion given (this does not mean you have to follow every suggestion, just consider it).

Cooking Time:
2 weeks to 1 month. Any less than 2 weeks and you won't have enough time to advertise and get entries. If you go beyond a month, participants might get impatient, or they might "put if off" a little too long and never get around to entering. If you do wish to run your contest for longer than a month, make sure the prompt is difficult enough to require such a long time (for example: a novel prompt contest)

Reccomendations:
*Bullet* It is encouraged to get 2-3 judges. Having only one other judge could leave you hanging if the other judge backs out at the last minute. Having 2-3 allows you.
*Bullet* Don't be shy about submitting your contest to the Contest & Activity Newsletter. The newsletter is sent out to almost 20,000 members around the site! It's like sponsoring, but free! *Idea*schipperke
*Bullet* Browse the contests on the site already to see if there are any contests similar to your own before you run with it. This will cut down on accusations of you stealing another persons idea. Keep in mind, though, ideas are NOT copyrightable, and you CAN do a contest that is similar to another contest.

*Note1*A note to all members. The following "recipes" will be used: Elimination Contests, Raffles, Auctions, and Groups. If you have any reccomendations for these activities, please feel free to share. If I use your reccomendation, your name/portfolio will be advertised in the newsletter!
