Read the following to test your inner geek or nerd qualities.
A web designer is filling out a form:
Age: 31
Height: 5’9”
Eye color: #008000
What is a programmer from Finland called? A Nerdic.
How do you comfort a grammar nerd?
By distinguishing between there, their, they're.
If you laughed at any of the jokes, you’re a nerd or a geek. Congratulations!
Many people think nerds and geeks have the exact same personality, but to write about them, it’s good to know the differences between the two.
Nerd: They tend to be introverted and may not lack social skills but prefer to spend their time studying. They do not really care how people perceive them and may appear carelessly dressed. Their biggest fashion statement is the glaring white pocket protector and thick dark glasses.
Geek: They are extraverted and will talk to eternity about the subject that interests them the most. Some people say they’re boring to listen to, but their main objective is to impress you. They are collectors of things and obsessed with every gadget known to mankind.
With that brief description, there’s a lot of material to add humor to your nerdy or geeky characters. Inspiration can come in other forms like looking at your own life. Without a doubt, I am a full-fledged nerd — a book nerd to be exact with good fashion sense.
The entertainment industry has many avenues to draw on for inspiration.
T.V. shows have brought to life the geeky and nerdy characters of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, Spock from Star Trek, and Steve Urkel from Family Matters.
The movies have made millions with nerd and geek characters, and these characters have wonderful characteristics to inspire humor. To name a few, there is Clark Kent from Superman, Indiana Jones, and my favorite nerd, Crispin Glover, who played George McFly from Back to the Future.
There's plenty of inspiration from books, too, with Sherlock Holmes, Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, and Jane Eyre, who I can relate to, because she was a book-nerd and all she wanted was peace and quiet to read books.
The next time you’re looking to add humor to a story, consider writing about a geek or a nerd for some comedy relief.
If you’re still not convinced of your own inner geek or nerd, here’s one last joke to prove it:
Where should one store all the nerdy dad jokes? In a dada-base.
Enjoy a video of my all-time favorite nerd! He plays the part to perfection — pocket-protector and thick, black glasses included.
Crispin Glover as George McFly from Back to the Future.

Are you a geek or a nerd? Have you written about a geek or nerd character? Any favorites?
Feedback from my last newsletter, "Comedy Newsletter (August 11, 2021)" :
s : "Just to let you know, the reason a comedy is a medieval tale with a happy ending is that is from the Greek words meaning a singer who brings joy. That's why Dante called his epic poem The Divine Comedy - not because it was funny, but the ideas of the worl brought people joy. If we want to get technical, comedy came to mean something funny because of Shakespeare. He wrote plays that brought joy with a happy ending, and they were called comedies, but they happened to have a few laughs in them. And so we have our comedy. This Shakespearian dennotation is as the opposite of tragedy, where the ending is sad. So comedy is not supposed to be funny, just happy.
And comedy as something funny is probably the most subjective thing out there. So, maybe, having it mean a happy ending makes it easier to define. Because there is no way I would classify anything with Melissa McCarthy or Adam Sandler a comedy as in funny (and 90% of Jim Carrey as well)."
Thanks for the comment! I totally agree with the medieval tale explanation. I just don't think it should be the first definition for what the word comedy means — that's what I was complaining about. Yes, the Melissa McCarthy's and the others you mentioned can go overboard on the Cringe comedy. I have the same problem with Will Ferrell. He sabotages almost every movie by going overboard on his rants. As an example, he totally ruined the movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga for me. It started off being so entertaining and funny and then he ruined it with one of his 'not funny' rants. So yeah, I hear ya! Lol!
Maryann : "Love your cute 'dad' jokes, Lornda!! LOL"
Thanks! If all else fails, tell a Dad joke.
Quick-Quill : "This is too funny. I love the Dad jokes."
Thanks for the comment. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
From the Newsfeed — thanks for responding!
Adherennium - Maybe Writing? : "Comedy is making unexpected connections between things. Perhaps more importantly it shields us from pain, makes us feel better about ourselves, and lets the fool speak what no one else dares to. It's a laugh i'n't it - no that's a strange noise that we make at the back of our throats. Actually I just thought of another definition - anything that needs a drum sting. Thank you, thank you - I'm here till Thursday."
Jay O'Toole : "Comedy is good-natured joy, that lightens the heart, while maintaining respect for others. It’s only comedy, if it brings a joyful belly laugh to the giver and receiver. Humor at another’s expense is too costly to be called, “Comedy.” "
s : Comedy is one of those things that doesn't really have one answer what I find funny and what you find funny might be totally different. Two different people could tell the same joke and you only laugh at one of them - why? Comedy is a personal response to an external stimulus that brings a sense of joy and relief and makes us feel happy.
What makes me laugh? Well, the latest film to make me laugh was The Suicide Squad. Monty Python still makes me laugh. 1980s British TV comedy. The writing of Douglas Adams. Drew Melbourne's book. Early Zucker Brothers films. Mel Brooks films. Shaun Micallef's TV shows. Tonightly on TV. 'Weird Al' Yankovic.
What doesn't make me laugh? Adam Sandler. Most Jim Carrey. US versions of British TV shows (including The Office). Most US "comedy" movies of the past 25 years. Most US TV sit-"com"s."
Bob : "Comedy is irony."
flash : "Getting a good laugh."
elephantsealer : "Comedy, to me, is all about the joy and laughter that comes with some kind of game/ritual/or anything about what human is about...without those bad, ugly "words" that come with comedy..."
Redtowrite : "Everyone's meaning of comedy is different. What makes me laugh might make you shudder. That is why you find like minded people go listen to certain comics. When I think my son did something funny when he was a kid and I announce at the dinner table, everyone will laugh but I get daggers from my kid. Oh, well, such is life, right?"
TheBusmanPoet : "Making my wife laugh for a lifetime."
THANKFUL SONALI Library Class! :
Anna Marie Carlson : "When I can have a good laugh without offending anyone."
