Letter from the editor

How’s 2022 going for you so far? Did you make any resolutions or set general goals for yourself? If so, are you making any progress? I’m not. But that’s okay.

I had a few things in mind for this year. First of all, I want to work on my health and fitness, because less-than-stellar health makes everything more difficult. I want to do well at university. Move to a nice countryside cottage with a decent garden. Find a way to tap back into my creative side. Discover what I actually, truly believe faith-wise. Be a good person. Taken together this may be overly ambitious. I don’t know. It’s not going too great so far. I’ve managed to get out an assignment, which is good, but then I saw that the store had Easter eggs in already and, yes, I bought one. And had a good time eating it over the next few days.

As said, it’s okay. We’re not even three weeks into the year. The thing with resolutions is that if we slip up at the start, it’s too easy to just give up. To feel that it’s a sign that we can’t do whatever we set out to do. It’s important to remember that any day chosen for the time of change is nothing more than a line drawn in the sand of a mental beach. There is nothing special about that day, nothing that signals doom if we aim for something and miss. All that’ll happen is that the line gets washed away. It’s no big deal. We can draw a new one.

I have yet to meet a person who considers their life to be perfect. There is always room for improvement. That’s not a bad thing, either; if we have nothing to work towards, nothing to hope for or dream of, we may grow restless and dissatisfied. As for the external, so it goes for the internal. I have yet to meet a person who is perfect. There are some absolutely amazing people out there, sure, but I doubt that there is nothing that they want to change about themselves. As long as this desire for change does not result in mental distress, that is fine and healthy. It is natural to learn and grow. If we look back at who we were five years ago, or ten, it’s unlikely that we find that past version of ‘me’ to be exactly the same as we are today.

With all these plans and goals going on, though, it is essential that we treat ourselves with kindness. I’ve often found that we are harsher on ourselves than we are to others. If you see someone trying to make a positive change, but slipping up here and there, you’re more likely to encourage them than to berate them. They’re trying! Let’s help them to keep on going! Yet, if we set ourselves a goal and we slip up our thoughts can be incredibly negative. There’s no cheerleading. There should be.

It doesn’t help that we’re still dealing with a pandemic. For many, daily life is not yet how it used to be. Nor does living through times like these lift one’s spirit. One thing that I am doing to help myself is to remind myself of everything that I am looking forward to this year. My list is likely to be different than your list, but if you can find some items to write down or make a mental note of, it may help you, too!

I am looking forward to:

*BulbY* The release of Cyrano, with Peter Dinklage.
*BulbY* The new Downton Abbey movie.
*BulbY* The next season of The Mandalorian.
*BulbY* Spring!
*BulbY* The first season of House of the Dragon.
*BulbY* Completing another academic year.
*BulbY* The Hogwarts Legacy game.
*BulbY* I read today that there’s going to be a Formula One manager game, which immediately made its way onto my list.

There’s more, but you get the idea. They’re little spots of light to brighten the road ahead, and it is helpful to have them.

Whatever your plans are for 2022, whatever your hopes and dreams, I hope that you will achieve them all. I also hope that if you find yourself struggling along the way, you will be kind. We can be our own biggest champions, and our own biggest enemies. Let’s lift ourselves up and move forward.
