Get In Your Groove
I entered a daily writing contest this month to get back in my groove. Over the holidays I slacked off on my daily writing offline and here in WDC. Daily writing doesn't always produce stellar work, but it keeps the pathways to creativity open and running. Instead of searching for something to write about, prompts or other things like music or photos get you going.
Sometimes a really great idea will pop up from some flash fiction you wrote for a prompt. Feel free to move it to private or take it offline and expand on the story. It could become a fabulous piece of writing. Either way, in the long run, you'll have some fun stuff in your portfolio to look back on.
Joining contests and activities help keep you active in the community and our site vibrant. If you have an idea and need help formatting a contest or activity, reach out to one of our awesome Moderators, they can help or at least direct you to helpful links within our site.
If you're a long-term member and want to experiment with something new, find a partner to help you out! I love seeing all the fun holiday-related contests and activities, it really gets me in the spirit. Help keep our community strong and as always, Write On!
This month's question: Do some of your contest entries turn into short stories or novels? Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback!

Excerpt: Write a Poem welcoming Spring or Fall if you are in the Southern Hemisphere.
Excerpt: This activity challenges you to write and review at least once a week for ten weeks.
Going all the way back in time to the first ever edition of I Write, any NEW writing in your portfolio counts.
This Round: Leader of the Sea Shanty
Sea shanties get the crew in rhythm and make them more productive. In this case, the "crew" is your characters, your brain weasels, your muse, your what-have-you. This year's Lodestar contest doesn't ask you to sing, but it does ask you to use a song of your choosing to inspire a story.
Excerpt: Whatever your musical tastes may be, most of us can agree that music plays an integral part in our lives. Many of us can remember where we were or what we were doing when we heard a particular song, of how it inspired us, brought us to tears, or made us giddy with happiness. This contest hopes to recapture those memories by encouraging you to listen to a favorite album again and allow the songs to inspire your creativity through writing.
Excerpt: The idea of this event came to mind because I’d like to use my free monthly merit badge for something worthwhile. I wasted so many merit badges offered free by Writing.Com in the past months and years by not being able to utilize them and give them out to someone deserving. So I thought, why not give it to a deserving poet?
Excerpt: A short contest for anyone writing with LGBT themes and characters.
Excerpt: Check out the Daily Snapshot and come up with the best cunning, creative, or clever caption and WIN.
Excerpt: If you enjoy celebrating things, this forum is for you! We celebrate member’s Anniversary’s year round in this forum by sending them a review during their Anniversary month! Help members celebrate another year of membership by sending them Anniversary Reviews.

Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (January 19, 2022)" question: How do you encourage fellow members besides reviewing?
Turkey DrumStik : Merit badges for especially creative responses to Support's post (like Suddenly Sunday or Three Word Thursday).
ForeverDreamer : Likes and comments on my blog are appreciated. So at t Awardicons that I have received.
s : I try to answer questions in WdC General Forum, offer advice to writers and do little things like that. Not much, I know... sorry.
Anna Marie Carlson : Hopefully I can encourage them by my own enthusiasm. Writing is great! Even though I don't have my computer yet, I still give it a try. My computer seems to have a mind of its own; it's frustrating at times.
Thanks to everyone for your responses! |
