Hosting a contest on WDC can be very rewarding! So what's stopping you from hosting one?
Experience? Everyone starts somewhere! If you need help setting up a contest or how one could work, look at contests that are out there now for a guideline. You can also ask for help from a moderator or one of the many forums on the site!
Time? Try hosting a short, one-shot contest to test it out. Allow yourself enough time for members to enter and then enough time to judge entries.
Prizes? If you don't have a lot of gift points, Reviewing on the site can be a great way to gather gift points for prizes! Start out small and offer what you can. Let viewers know that donations would gladly be accepted or hold an auction or some type of event to raise gift points!
If you're nervous that people won't see your contest, there are several ways to advertise! You can sponsor the contest if you have the gift points. You can add a link to your contest to your signature when you post in discussion forums, add it to your handle, post about it in your blog/journal, add it to the end of your public reviews, etc.
It's always okay to ask for help! You can ask for co-judges or co-hosts if you'd like to have some help running your contest or activity. You can even offer to guest-host or guest-judge if you want some experience to see if it's something you'd like to do on your own!
I know from experience that reading others' work improved my own writing, and hosting a contest is a great way to gather reading material! Judging entries really can help you think critically about writing and what makes a good piece of writing. Plus, interacting on the site can be very rewarding, too!
Give it a try!
Take care, and as always, keep on writing!
