Is it hot where you are? If so, look after yourself, and your pets, too!
This week's Action/Adventure Newsletter is all about the weather. I know. We Brits and Dutchies do like to discuss it!

It’s really hot outside. Inside is slightly better, but still, the temperature is such that it’s impossible to get comfortable. Tomorrow it’s going to be 40°C (104°F) and even at night it’s 30°C (86°F). Way too high for my liking.
We’re not used to this kind of weather in the UK. Our houses aren’t built for it. Hardly any building has air conditioning. It is, then, an unpleasant experience to endure. All I can do is hope that we’ll soon see a return to more reasonable weather.
If you are going through a similar experience, I hope that you’re looking after yourself. Some people get on better with hot weather than others, I know, but basic precautions are essential regardless.
First of all, be sure to keep hydrated. Keep a water bottle within reach and remember to take regular sips.
If you can, avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day. If you do have to go outside, try to keep in the shade. Apply sunscreen, wear a hat and, again, keep hydrated.
Close your curtains or blinds. If, like me, you don’t have air conditioning, settle in the coolest room of your house, which is likely to be the downstairs room. If you have a fan, placing a bowl of ice in front of it can help cool the area.
Place some damp towels or wash cloths in a sealed bag and put them in the fridge, or in the freezer for a short while. When the heat is getting to you, take one out and place it on your neck or wrists to help you cool down. Cool baths or showers can be helpful, too.
Keep your pets inside, especially during the hottest hours of the day. The heat can be as damaging to them as it can to us. Also, the hot pavement can damage their pads and toe beans. And please don’t leave them in your car. Keep them cool – my cats are currently firmly settled in front of my fan - and make sure they have constant access to clean water.
You may not feel like eating much, or at all, but it’s important that you do. Small meals throughout the day are the way to go. You’ll likely not want to stand in the kitchen for hours on end and add to the temperature of the house, but fruit, salads, porridge and yoghurt are quick and healthy options, and a boiled egg can supply you with a dose of protein.
I know that it’s difficult, but it’s best to avoid caffeine during hot weather. Caffeine has a dehydrating effect. As someone who isn’t permitted caffeine anyway, I am happy to tell you that decaf tea is just as nice as regular tea. I have never been into coffee, so I cannot vouch for the decaf version, but it’s worth a shot. The safest option is, of course, water. I confess that I tend to add a dash off no-added-sugar Vimto to mine but hey, none of us are perfect.
Last but not least, if you at all can, give yourself permission to take it easy. This is not the weather for strenuous exercise. It’s okay to rest. It will help your body through the strain placed upon it by the high temperature (and humidity). Be kind to it, and to yourself.
You can read, and if your muse isn’t off on holiday you can write. Watch some TV, listen to some music, think of all the things you’re going to do when the hot weather passes. I’m planning on getting my hair cut and coloured and spending some hours meeting owls at a falconry centre.
Whatever your plan of action for the summer, I hope you’ll enjoy it. Safely. Don’t forget that sunscreen!
