I'm grateful for my own head and for all the weird things in it.
~ Claire Wineland
I like to write about real people, real crimes. But what has increasingly come to interest me, and also appear to me as a challenge, is the idea of doing strange things with what is real. Take what is real and make it more or less real.

This week Writing.com celebrates its 23rd Birthday. That is a big deal for any site but especially for this one. It is unlike any other site I've come across over the years. I've made friends and maybe even a few enemies but the most important part about this site is that I found my second home many years ago and even though we all disappear from time to time, we always come back. Mom and Pops always welcome us here with open arms as does the entire community.
Many moons ago I joined this site in hopes to share my poetry with others. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to find a kindred community of people and writers who feels the same way. Writing stories has never been my thing and yet I found myself sitting down, scribbling, sharing, being excited when receiving a review from someone. A complete novice to writing. A complete novice. Now, I consider myself a somewhat decent writer. I couldn't have done that without this community and the support of friends and strangers alike.
At times we forget or, maybe because the site is so big, many don't realize that the entire site is run by two people. One who is all about the visual and the other who creates the many aspects of the site which make it run smoothly in the first place. I've interacted with them on many occasions and I've found that they are two of the kindest, down to earth people I've ever met.
The StoryMaster is actually the reason why I'll pick up a Mystery or Horror Newsletter from time to time to share some advice and/or personal writing experience. If it weren't for him, I'd have never dabbed in either of those genres, let alone be excited to produce a written piece. I thought I'd be a lover of romance until the day I die but it was he who opened my eyes.
We are capable of learning more, wanting to know more. The only limitations we have are the ones we've put on ourselves. With that, I hope you're able to give something new a try. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. It's okay to fail. Without learning we cannot grow.
This coming up week will be full of contests and activities. Get to know other members! Try your hand at a genre you thought you wouldn't like to pursue. It just might surprise you. It might teach you a thing or two. And if you don't like it, well, at least you gave it your best shot.
Happy 23rd Birthday, WdC!
