2024 Reading Goals

In last week's NL, NaNoNette Author Icon wrote about writing goals for 2024 in "Contests & Activities Newsletter (November 29, 2023)Open in new Window., and it got me thinking about reading goals. I think reading can be just as important as writing to improve and strengthen our skills!

Personally, I was bitten by the reading bug in 2023, and my reading goal ended up being 150 books! I'm still 8 books away, but I think I'll meet my goal. The only problem I've found with reading that amount is that a lot of it isn't very good. I'm going to work on being more selective in 2024 and maybe read some longer works, so my end goal number will likely be much lower.

One way to reach your reading goal is to host a contest! There are sites that can keep track of books that you've read, but another great goal would be short stories or peer works. Sign up as a beta or ARC reader! (Though make sure you have the time to commit to it. I mistakenly signed up for a few this year, and then my book goal took over. I'm committing myself to the goal of finishing the reads I volunteered for in 2024!)

Set a goal for poetry! How many poems can you read in 2024? Can you read one poem per day? Only one way to find out! One great way to commit would be to host a contest, so you have plenty of things to read that are delivered directly to you! If you're not able to make the commitment to reading contest entries by a deadline (and hosting, judging, prize-giving that comes with hosting), either enlist help, or look to a contest's entries for reading material. As a bystander, you can follow a forum's submissions and read and review them! Maybe even enter some writing yourself! *Wink*

Get creative with your goals! My reading partner and I are working on coming up with a reading goal Bingo board that we can try to fill in to win a prize in 2024! Here are some ideas for reading goals:

*Idea* Read a book/story/poem from a culture you haven't read before
*Idea* Read a new genre
*Idea* Listen to an audiobook
*Idea* Read something based on the title alone
*Idea* Ask a friend for a recommendation
*Idea* Start a new series
*Idea* Enter a contest and read/review all the other entries

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*
