FUN WILL NOW COMMENCE

Are you considering developing your own WdC contest or activity? Should you? Of course! If you want to, you should absolutely go for it. You have the tools to create a fun and engaging activity. Let’s talk about the decision process.

Decision Point #1: Contest vs. Activity
For the sake of clarity, I am going to be focusing on writing contests and writing activities. Are there other types of contests and activities? Of course! Most of what I will be covering is applicable to any type of contest or activity.

So, what is the difference between the two categories? Even more to the point, IS there a difference? Yes, there is. To be clear, this is my opinion. I have heard differing ideas, but you, lucky reader, are going to get my take on this subject.

Contests are a competition between entrants. Whatever they enter is judged against what other people enter. There are prizes awarded on that judging. Not all entries are awarded prizes.

Activities may also have prizes, and usually do, but it isn’t awarded due to a judging process. Usually the prizes are given out if the entrant meets the stated goal/s.

Now that we have all that sorted, onto…

Decision Point #2 Frequency
Are you planning to run this contest/activity continuously or periodically? Will it have an established or random schedule?

There are pros and cons to these different schedules. Continuous contests/activities have the advantage of always being there, always open and accepting entries. People get to know they can rely on this. The disadvantage is burn out, either yours and the potential entrants. It takes a lot of time and energy to keep it fresh and attractive all the time.

It is possible that having an established timetable may be slightly advantageous. People get to know that your contest/activity is open around certain holidays, in certain months, etc. and know to look for it.

Having a random timetable allows you to be spontaneous to some degree. You can decide to open when the time is right for your life and schedule and then let people know you have done so. The disadvantage is that your intended audience may miss announcements that you have opened.

Decision Point #3: Theme
Some questions to get you started: what kind of thing do you enjoy writing? More importantly, what do you enjoy reading? What are you enthusiastic about? Do you see a subject, genre, idea that hasn’t been covered in an established contest or activity? Not sure? Check this out for a list of WdC writing contests and activities. It will give you a great idea of what is already out there."Contest CluesOpen in new Window.

YOU ARE NOT DONE!
There are more decisions to make, but we will cover them in a future newsletter issue.

Ask & Answer

My last Contest & Activities newsletter was "I Want To Speak To The Manager!Open in new Window.. Here is some comments I received:

🌕 HuntersMoon
A poem about Mac 'n Cheese? Perfect! It's one of my youngest grandson's favorite foods. I love how you put your Muse in her place; I'll have to keep that in mind. I'm getting cooperation from mine, at the moment, but things change.*Laugh*

Thanks Ken. It's one of my favorite foods, too, always has been. My muse has bossed me around for waaaaay too long and it was high time to get her back in line.

A SELECTION OF RESPONSES FROM NEWSFEED:

Adherennium Plotting something
Nope. Write-Write has very definite 'ideas' about who is in charge, and what happens if 'someone' forgets that it's her!

Turkey DrumStik
I'm trying to get my writing muse to shut up so my photography muse can speak freely. It's going okay for the moment.

Asha Moonfall - Plotting Book!
My dragon muse, Silverwing, is currently chasing something outside!! I wish she would come back! I miss writing!

scifiqueen
No, but my muse might have tried some tricky measures to get me writing what he wants me to write.

My muse always co-operates... after all, she's in charge. I just do what she says and everything is then fine...

I just wish she'd give me some peace once in a while.

The Dark Faery
My muse has her moments, there are times she is creative. Sometimes I think she goes on vacation.
