Summer is just around the corner. In 8 days, June 20th will be here, and summer officially starts. When I think of summer, I think of how rich nature is alive – the trees are green, the water is cool and crisp, the air is fresh. Reminds me of Alaska! I just took a cruise there the last week of May and absolutely fell in love!

Ah, yes, you can fall in love with nature! I love the woodsy outdoors of my home state New Hampshire and Alaska is very similar in that regard – very woodsy. I was going to write about falling in love with nature. It’s a more subtle theme, I think and probably would apply more to “setting” in a romance story. I got to thinking falling in love with nature, a place, or setting, probably tugs on the heart, much like nurturing a romance itself.

So what makes romance successful? What makes falling in love rewarding? I’ve found seven elements which I’ll tackle below that round out the answer and are essential building blocks when writing a romance.

Question for you: Which place that you visited, did you fall in love with?

Letter from the editor

As I thought about falling in love with Alaska, I realized the same things happen when falling love. A good romance story should try to capture some of the same elements.

#1 Devotion – This is a about loyalty and commitment. As you feel an affinity for a place or a person, you develop a sense of commitment. Most characters in a story feel that pull early on and then it’s just building on it. I felt the same sense after spending a day in Juneau. I wanted to see more of Alaska and build on this sensation of commitment.

#2 Attachment – feeling a strong bond or connection. I think this is something that happens early when two people meet, there’s something they share in common that will allow them to bond. Like a love of being in nature, perhaps?

#3 Passion – is a strong, or intense emotion, that has trouble being contained. As a couple falls in love, they enjoy holding hands, etc. Showing how they feel is important to them.

#4 Independence
– It’s also important for that new couple to maintain a sense of independence and not lose themselves in the newness of a relationship. Having a strong sense of who you are and confidence in you, will allow for healthy growth as the relationship continues.

#5 Trust – This is building honesty in a relationship. It’s what a couple expects from the other person. Without trust you can’t build for the long run.

#6 Communication – Being open and honest and even realistic is a big key of being able to navigate the complexities of a romance. There are always issues that come up. If you can communicate then you learn to deal with the problems.

#7 – Intimacy -- allows for a deep emotional connection as well as a deep physical connection. A couple with a comfortable connection and mutual respect is ready for the long term.

If you think about it, the elements, in order, build a romance from a first meeting to a long term commitment. A romance story goes through all of these elements building a foundation for a strong relationship.

When it comes to Alaska, I’m ready to buy a summer home there. The husband, not so much, only because of finances, but who knows… if we win the lottery, we might be in for the long haul.
