About This Newsletter

What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing.*Smile*

Letter from the editor

*Star* What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hardboiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here?

In this week's newsletter, I would like to stress the importance of plot, setting, and character definition. The three go hand in hand. Without a good storyline, even strong characters and settings are weakened.

A writer should never lose sight of realism when writing a mystery. The plot, characters, and setting should draw a reader into a story from the beginning, and hold the reader's interest to the very end. Catching a reader's interest does not mean giving away too much. It's making the storyline, character, and setting definition so intriguing that the reader cannot wait to find out who is behind the mystery. The plot must be puzzling. Clues should be divulged gradually instead of in haste. The same applies to the culprit. No one wants to finish a story that lacks strength in plot, character, and setting.
