About This Newsletter

What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing.*Smile*

*Star* What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hardboiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here?

Letter from the editor

This week's newsletter will center on mystery plots. Some writers mistake why the plot of a mystery is a necessity. If you are writing a criminal mystery, it should be centered more on the puzzling characters, events, and setting than one of romance. An exception to the rule is if one of the charcters involved is the culprit. When combining a mystery/action story, there must be enough of both to hold a reader's interest. The same goes for mystery/supernatural and mystery/horror tales. In these types of stories, the supernatural and horror events should both be that of a mysterious nature, yet also keep a reader puzzled until the finale. The characters and setting are even more important in these combinations than in a typical mystery. Be creative. Creativity adds to a reader's enjoyment. For example, if you are luring a reader into your story making them believe it is a character responsible for horrifying or supernatural activity, give the tale a twist by totally surprising them when something or someone else is responsible. *Wink* *Star*
