In the Merry Old Month of May

We know May brings us Mother's Day and Memorial Day in the United States, but did you know there are dozens of other perfectly good holidays in May that go by with nary a mention and without its own Hallmark section for the occasion? Not to mention observations the whole month long, like National Hamburger and Blood Pressure Month. Even today, May 15, has several here-to-for unknown holidays.

For instance, did you know that today is Cold Sophie Day? Me niether! *Bigsmile* Imagine my surprise to discover a holiday named after me, celebrated in Germany (and now on WDC!). Apparently those ever-pessimistic Germans traditionally expect there to be a final cold snap of the season on May 15th, so this is a day Germans spend appealing to traditional mythological goddesses for warmer weather - including Cold Sophie, the Ice Saint! I'm a goddess AND a saint, who knew? Well to be honest, I always did suspect. *Wink* Anyway, after May 15 (tomorrow I guess) Germans can begin tending and planting their spring gardens. You're welcome.

Today, May 15 is also Ides of May Day in Ireland - no clue what it means but if it gives them a day off school or work, more power to 'em! *Wink* It's also National Chocolate Chip Day, Nylon Stockings Day, as well as Sea Monkeys Day. Remember those magic sea monkey kits? You just added water to those mysterious packets and waited for the colorful sea monkey kingdoms to grow. Well today is their day. That's nice, to give them a day, since the rest of their days must be pretty awful, being sea monkeys and all, lol.

Here is a May 15 holiday that ignites my comedy writing muse fuse - Relive Your Past Day. Do you remember the first record album you ever purchased? What's a record album? Um, err, do you remember the first song you purchased on iTunes then? *Wink* May 15th is the day to dust off the vinyl, eight-track, cassette, compact disc, or iPod and crank up the tunes as you relive the glory days of your past, which you survived tell us all about!

So here's you challenge - use one of the May holidays mentioned above (or make up one of your own) and write a comedy piece about it. Then share it with me to use in next month's newsletter. Until then, write on! *Bigsmile*

I must say that I have never been so entertained as when I was reading a Douglas Addams novel. The world is an imperceptible shade dimmer without the light generated by his unique sense of humor. Don your peril sensitive glasses and proceed with caution.

Well said! *Bigsmile*

I am reading Terry Reid's paranormal series. In the first few books I laughed out loud at some things she wrote. I am in book 9 and I remember now it's been a long time since I laughed.

I am not familiar with those - are they funny because of the content, or is it her writing? Did she mean them to be funny? Very sad if she didn't, lol.

I like Bridget Jones's Diary. There are bits of (Bridget Jones) Edge of Reason that are funnier, but overall the first one is a much better novel. I preferred the first film to the second one as well. I didn't like the second film much. I also think P.G. Wodehouse is great. Very, very silly.

Also very funny (Bridget Jones' books) and I agree about the first being funniest. That's usually the case, isn't it? I hear there may be a third one?

Hi Sophy - for me the "Discworld" novels of Terry Pratchett are at the top of the list. It can be quite embarrassing sitting in a bus and bursting out laughing. People look at you like ...

Going back a couple of generations, almost anything by P G Wodehouse still makes me laugh.

I will have to check out Prachett - not familiar with those books. Same question as above, did the author mean them to be funny? Sure hope so! *Laugh*

Hi Sophy!
Moore's book sounds completely delightful! It reminds me of the irreverent humor of "Life of Brian." Love that movie! I've never read a comedy novel, but I sure enjoy comedy movies. Thanks for the funny NL! *Bigsmile* Oh! And thanks so much for featuring my poem in the Editor's picks.
~ Laura

I ADORE "Life of Brian" - loving that movie is what got me to read Lamb, which I know you will also enjoy. "Dogma" is a riot also (movie by Kevin Smith).

Oh! And you are welcome. *Smile*

FUNNIEST BOOK: Greetings! I agree with your selection of Moore's Biff. My entrance to Moore was with Fool which is a paradoy of Shakespeare's King Lear as told through the eyes of the court jester. That hooked me on reading a number of Moore's books but my personal, literal LOL's were Lamb and Fool. Thanks! - Steve

I will have to try Fool, thanks for the suggestion.

I recommend the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. You'll laugh, and you'll cry. You'll cheer, and you'll shiver. You'll shout out nonsense words that are gibberish to those who haven't read the series. Logalogalogalog! *Left* Like that phrase. If you don't know what it stands for, I recommend running, because a bunch of shrews are after you!

Thanks for the recommendation. *Smile*
