Daylight Savings Time

Many countries in the world follow Daylight Savings Time (DST), and here in the US we just turned our clocks back one hour. Prepare for some confusion this week!

One hour doesn't seem like much. We'll get an extra hour of daylight after all! Some people, though, can be adversely affected by the time change. I was never one of those people, and I didn't understand how others said they were tired and confused for weeks after the change. I'm not sure if it's getting older (surely, not!) but it did seem to affect me last year to a certain extent...

It all started in New Zealand, according to wikipedia, by a man named George Hudson. He was an entomologist (studied bugs) who wanted more time to collect and study insects after his day-shift job. Contrary to popular belief, DST wasn't created or even promoted by farmers. Hudson was the first to propose changing our clocks to enjoy more daylight!

It was a controversial idea from its start, and people (myself sometimes included) argue that it's a pretty pointless thing to still do.

Regardless, many of us are helpless if our jobs and social surroundings follow DST. There are conflicting traffic studies. Some say an increase of car accidents occur, while others find a decrease.

How does this relate to Writing.Com and the Contests & Activities Newsletter?

Well, remember that your contests and activities use deadlines that often are a specific time. It may be a good idea to remind your contestants about the time change (though perhaps a little late now, since this newsletter will arrive in your inbox after the change). Perhaps it will explain if there is some confusion going on this week due to time differences and changes. Keep it in mind for the Fall! *Smile*

I'll be spending the next week or so trying to shift my sleep patterns and trying not sleep in too late! *Laugh* And I, for one, will definitely enjoy the extra hour of sunlight at the end of the day!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (February 17, 2016)Open in new Window.), discussed healthy competition.

True story this. I regularly participate in 30 day story contest where we have to write 30 stories in 30 days based on image prompts. Each and every time I have written full thirty. Considering how little I write during my own paced routine, this writing spree has got to be because of the contest. ~ Kanish ~ we got this! Author Icon

That sounds like a great inspiration and it's definitely working for you! Awesome! *Smile*
